I have an encore in 243. This pistol shoots 1" groups off sandbags. I killed an antelope at 200 yds. I used to shoot the 100gr bullets, but have switched to 80gr hot core which zip out @3200fps. The recoil of this pistol is very reasonable compared to those shooting heavier bullets. If you are recoil sensitive, EA Brown has a JP Howitzer type of muzzle break that will negate most recoil. I have one on a 375 H&H rifle barrel....and the felt recoil is like a 308. In my opinion, the 260 would also be a good pistol round for whitetails. You know, the 223 with the right bullets is deadly on deer, is pleasant to shoot, and practice ammo is cheap.
When I would shoot the Encore out at McMiller before I moved to MN the recoil blast would literally blow things off the neighboring bench. Many a time the poor guy at the next bench would be asking the range officer to move because it was so distracting. I intend to pick up a new barrel in 44 rem mag which has considerably less recoil then the 7-08 and is plenty for the deer woods I'm now hunting. Longest shot is only 100 yards and the new Hornady Lever Flex tips should work great.
I have owned an Encore pistol in 7-08 since 1996 which replaced an XP-100 in 7MM bench rest. I have used pistol to take 6 or 7 deer. In the past I was hiking into distant locations with a climbing tree stand and found the Encore pistol in a bandoleer holster was a great choice for this kind of run and gun hunting. I found the pistol to be very accurate but recoil was oppressive. I had the barrel ported by a shop in CO which reduced the recoil by 40% or so. I carried a forked walking stick which I used as a shooting rest. By placing the stick between my knees when seated in the tree stand and placing the pistol in the fork I was steady enough to makes shots at 100 yards. Nice option if you're in shotgun country like we are here in SE MN.
