I have been planning to buy a 300 win mag chamber rifle for awhile but am not sure what brand to buy. I want synthetic and stainless. I have looked at several different models and talked to several people at different gun stores (Cabela's, Midwest Shooters, Gander Gun World, and a couple others). The only consistency I've found is inconsistency. Suggestions have been Remington, Savage, Browning, Weatherby, and Sako. Now, I have seriously looked at all but am very confused. Just curios what ideas anyone else had out there. In my mind I would like to spend $1000 to 1300 or so on the gun itself and put some nice glass on it, but the Rem. and Savage suggestions come in a fair amount under my price point ideals. I know it may sound like I'm complaining about not spending enough money but I have always believed in you get what you pay for. If anyone has any suggestions please pass them along, brand specific models if possible.

Thanks for any help, BigRyan

I agree with ditto-there is no way anyone is going to reload a single shot faster than a bolt, accurate or not. It's not happening. I still scratch my head as to why anyone would buy a single shot rifle. Break it open, and you would have to take your eye OFF your target to get the next shell in...seems silly to me. Every deer I've shot with my 300 was a one shot deal, but I like to know I've got back up if I need it. I have a 300 Win mag in a Winchester Model 70. I love it. I have dumped a few deer with it, and have no complaints. I also have a Browning BAR safari 300 short. That's also a very nice rifle if you are open to that action...all the power of the mag with a short shell. The action does not have to travel as far. I have not had it jam yet, but clean it too. Try a few out, see how they feel. Sounds like all your choices would be good ones. Good luck.

I am considering a Sako A7 Tecomate in 300 wsm. This gun has a fluted stainless barrel, a Bell and Carlson stock and has a 5 shot moa guarantee. I know Midwestern shooters can order this for you and have it in about a week for under 1200. They only come in 300 wsm and 270 wsm but I think you get a lot of gun with the Beretta family of firearms.

I have owned a Remington 700 stainless/synthetic 300 Win. Mag for the last 16+ years and would never part with it. The only draw back is that it is a heavy rifle to carry up and down the mountains in Colorado. As stated before it is a "Tack driver"! I only run my hand loads through it and have never hand any sort of malfunctions or problems with the rifle at all. It will destroy cheap optics!!!!!

WarEagle, If you like the Encore that's fine but I think I would take you up on how fast you can reload it compared to my bolt. THe bolt throw of a 300 Win Mag is the same as that of a 30/06. I can work the bolt on my 300H&H (which has a longer blot throw than the Win Mag) faster than anyone can ACCURATLEY reload an Encore. If I wanted to I could make mine sound like a semi auto and I just don't believe you could do that with breaking the barrel open, removing the spent shell, grabbing a new shell, putting the new shell in the barrel, closing the action, cocking the hammer, and then firing it.

I got a 300 win mag barrel for my Encore because of the long stroke you have to make with a bolt action. I can reload the single shot faster than a bolt action. It is a tack driver with a 165 g bullet, now developing a 180 g for bear hunting this fall.

Thanks everyone, I really appreciate all of your in sites. I am not planning on going for bear, moose (done that), or Africa. I just want a 300 mag., enough said. I am leaning towards the Browning models but the custom route sounds interesting too. Marineman, I'll check into the one your wrote about. Again thanks to all, and keep it going. Ryan

This months 'Rifle Shooter' magazine has a good article on E.R.Shaw Custom rifles that would be right in or just below your price point. Never shot one but they seam to LOVE it.

Last November I purchased this Remington Model 700 ADL 300 WIN Mag with a 4-12X Leupold scope at Gander Mountain. I killed this 11 point buck with it, dead in his tracks on Sunday afternoon after the Packer game on opoening weekend. Actually, you should pick out a rifle that feels right for you. All the big name brands are good. It's the shooter that makes the difference. Good luck.

"You going for moose, big bears or intend to hunt Africa?" Hhahahaha Agreed Dave . I own a .300WIN Mag and it is a tackdriver . Never shot a whitetail with it however ,, I dump em with the .243 , 25-06 , .300SAV etc ,,,,,, There is no need for anything special to whack a deer . Natives used sticks/sharp stone to kill em ,,,,, for eons . Wink

Spend what you like.

I would take into consideration what others have said on here... how well the gun is made. You can find them cheap from $300 all the way up to over $4000.

I have a Winchester 70 FL in the 300WSM. I also own Ruger, Remington, S&W and some off the wall stuff.

If they do not shoot good they are gone.

Ryan, what's your desire to spend that much on a rifle? Do you want a sub - moa gun, a heirloom, bragging rights? Give us more detail and maybe we can help. Otherwise any name brand will do you good. As far as Rugers go...I own 3 and they all shoot MOA or better. Depending how good of a shot you are, I'd say spend $800 on a gun and $ 200-400 on good shooting instruction or ammo.

My Rugers have all been bedded and my MarkII has had trigger work.

That's the other alternative - spend $700-800 on a name brand and have work done to it to make it YOUR rifle.

Not to get off topic, it seems key boards give us some hidden power to pass off generalizations.

Just to stop the myth, Ruger makes all their own barrels have for some time. In the past they had different barrel manufactures, Wilson, Hart to name a couple. Today they make all their own.

And all though I am not much of a 300 Win mag fan, if you want one get it. A good friend of mine has a Ruger all weather 300 win mag, it kicks like a mule but on my range he can hold a five shot string from a rest inside 3 in's at 300 yards.

Ruger makes some very fine rifles, as do others in my opinion, and their customer service is second to none.

Good luck GF
