Never started a thread before but.....

I have a hole in my gun safe that I'd like to fill and thought maybe someone here could help me with a good start on my research. I'm not asking what is best or what you'd recommend, although I'll definitely take that info if you offer it.

What I need are some internet resources / brand names to use as a starting point for my research. I'd also love to hear from anyone that currently has a similar firearm regarding do's / don't's as I choose the one to purchase. FYI, this will be my first black rifle and I know very little at this point.

I plan to use it for both plinking / fun at the range, but I also want it to be a good small game gun (rabbit / squirrel). My budget is whatever it takes to have a damn fine rifle.

Thoughts / suggestions?

Thank you!!

I've got the M&P 15-22, it is a lot more fun to shoot the either of the 10-22s I had. The 10-22s were the cats azz before I upgraded. Pity the creatures of the night.

You're probably right BT, I'm 6'5" tall and the 10-22 never really fit me.

Just picked up the M&P 15-22 MOE yesterday afternoon and spent part of last eveing learning how to field strip / clean it. I sometimes spend hours in the winter just tinkering with my guns and thinking about

Really looking forward to spending some time shooting it this weekend... knowing that I'm not spending $1 - $3 every time I squeeze the trigger.

Ammunition (good ammo) prices are just insane IMO...particularly for the guns I've bought recently....22-250, 270WSM, 300WSM, .257 Roberts. Gonna load my own one day but I just don't have the time now.

The 10/22 is a small rifle and feels uncomfortable to larger-framed individuals. That's how I got the one for my boy. The gentleman I got it from put 20 rounds through it and decided it wasn't for him. Too small. He gave me a good deal on it. Some of the after-market stocks you can buy have an adjustable stock like the AR's and that makes it more comfortable for us bigger guys.

Good luck with your purchase. You can't beat the .22 caliber in this day and age. Ammo ain't getting any cheaper.

Again, thanks everybody for the suggestions. Right now, I'm leaning toward the S&W MP15-22. I really like the idea of a dedicated .22 cal on that platform. The MOE model in desert tan/black is a real looker IMO.

Obviously, the 10-22 had crossed my mind initially but I've just never been a big fan...since I had one when I was a kid and never really liked it a whole lot. Only gun in my whole life I've ever sold. Haven't had a .22 since. Excellent rifle...I know tons of people who will use nothing else...just not for me.

My boy has a Ruger 10/22 that we've tricked out. It has an assault rifle look to it and you can get after-market parts on many websites to achieve this look and feel to the gun.

I have an AR-15 in .223 and I have looked into after-market kits that will convert it to a .22LR. The barrel diameter is the same, the bolt and magazine are the main parts that have to be substituted.

If $$ isn't an object, I'd go with the AR-15 and a conversion kit. That way you have the option of two cartridge/calibers. I know a private FFL dealer that can hook you up with a nice flat-top M-4 carbine set up for under $700 (plus shipping, etc.) I put some nice optics on mine and still stayed under my $1K budget.

There are alot of .22 uppers available for AR15 lowers. Been looking into building on in .223 and plan on getting one of the .22 uppers in the future. Just Google .22 uppers and you will find quite a few to pick from.

100% agree w/ Claybirds. I can also say, though, that a custom 10/22 is a very fun way to build a gun exactly the way that you want it. Both are going to get the trick done but the 10/22 is a little more work...possibly maybe making it worth more to you in the end. Eabco and CheaperThanDirt are the two places that I purchased all of my parts for my 10/22. With a bull barrel, a properly fitting stock and a good optic on the top you can literally hit thumb tacks at 50 yards consistently with my Ruger.

If I was looking to get a AR style 22 I would definitely look into the CMMG guns, I believe they are the only ones that are producing a complete 22 style AR with a Mil Spec lower, pull two pins, pull off the 22 upper and swap it out for a 223, now that's what I call versatility.

I think they are around the same price as the S&W MP22

Check out there web site -

Of course if you already have a Mil Spec lower, you could go with a 22 upper, or a 22 conversion kit.

Get a 10/22 and build your own the way you want. They are very easy to work on and there are a ton of extras you can add on.

THe S&W 15-22 is prety much the gold standard that other AR style 22's are judged on. THe S&W is the only one that has all the same controls as the real AR15's do. The Colt/Umarex has things that look like the same controls but they actualy don't work and are just there for looks. The S&W also uses the same trigger as real AR's and you can put in an after market trigger if you want to. I have about 3000 suppresed rounds though mine with only a couple FTF and most of that I would attribute to ammo problems.

THe Mosberg is a cheapo .22 auto made to look like an AR.
