Marinerman, I ended up with a service grade M1.

The receiver is a 1943 Springfield, it was re-barreled in 1954 with a Springfield barrel, I took it all apart and found that it also has a Springfield bolt, trigger assembly, hammer, op rod, and it has new CMP wood on it.

It has been a hoot to shoot, and looking to reload for it.

Didn't buy one, just got one back that was loaned to a couple of LEO's for a few months. S&W M&P 40c. They were looking for an off duty CC. They liked it way better than the Glock. Nice to try before you buy.

Claybird, What did you end up with? I picked up a HRA last year and if it wasn't unissued it was close. NO wear on any internal surface and an original barrel that gauged new. I don't shoot with an adjustable plug. I either shoot CMP HXP surplus ammo (good deal) or I reload a real nice mild load. If you reload be careful of your powder choice. It doesn't matter as much as the velocity of your load as where the pressure spike occurres in your barrel.

Just picked up a CMP M1 Garand.

Now looking for items to start reloading for it.

Anyone have experience with the adjustable gas plug that they sell so you can shoot normal 30-06 ammo?

Wieland, could be posted to a different thread but tell me I read it wrong. You're NOT intending at shooting Elk at 900-1000 yds with a 270 WSM or any other rifle for that matter.

Similar ballistics on paper but with much better bullets that penetrate and expand in the deer. This would be a close range gun only and basically a toy.

ditto, I always liked you but why would you want to hunt deer with something like that ? May as well use a model 1911 for the same ballistics.

8.5" 300 Blackout. Came as a pistol but I put it on my SBR lower to see how it would look for deer hunting, I think it looks pretty darn cool! 208gr bullet at 1150fps.

Just picked up a CMMG AR pistol in 300 BlackOut. I'll probably end up putting the upper on a rifle lower (yes I have an SBR lower) and suppress it.

Randy,

Yes it is beautiful.

I have to say I am very impressed with your set up as well. It takes a lot of effort to get that kind of accuracy at that kind of range. I tinker with my 22-250 to get out there but my "large game" rifles I call it good out to 300 for some reason.

DLAMA2 Thats a beautiful work of art. Pain staking effort goes into that level of engraving. Not like the CNC machine engraving you see on "modern" stuff

Bought another Tikka Stainless .270 short mag for long range. Pulled the action from the plastic stock and dropped it into a Boyd Thumbhole Sporter, Timmey trig and a little tweek. Burris XTR 6-24 w/ the XTR mounts Modified the cheek plate on the stock for a 1" additional rise and slimmed out the thumbhole for a better fit to my hand. Sinclair Tactical bipod with lock swivel head. Shooting Barnes 140gr TSX over MagPro/Fed Gold Match primers, Norm brass - (annealed) 3280fps over the chrony.

Zero'd at 317yrd. Group shown is 500yrds on the bench under 1/2MOA Currently shooting out to 900yrds with intent of 1000+

Built it specifically for elk at the higher elevations
