I went on a shopping spree on Fri. I bought a Ruger .357 revolver and a Bushmaster AR15 in .223 cal. That was an expensive BUT fun day. I bought the .357 to carry on me bowhunting and to keep in the nightstand at home and I am really not sure why I bought the AR15. Oh yeah, the election. Dull

Anyone else bought anything lately? Lets hear what, why, ect!!!!! Smile

I had the same experience when I pulled Grandpa's old Iver-Johnson 410 out the gun cabinet to do recon and suppression of the red squirrels terrorizing my soffits up north. I'da just used the 20 gauge but it rips up my pine branches too much.

I have a 16 gauge that I haven't used since duck hunting in college 20 years ago. I wonder what a box of those go for now.

IN my ast post I sid that I bought a little Winchestr M42 in 410, I figured I would shoot a couple rounds of skeet with it this Thursday. I went to Gander today to get some ammo and was in shock. I knew 410 ammo was pricey compared to 12 or 20 gauge but I wasn't ready for $21.95 a box for Remington 3" #6 shot! Thankfully they had soe 2-1/2" Fiochi's for $9.99 as I don't know if I could have allowed myself to spend $22 a box for 410 shells.

Just bought a Winchester M42 410 pump made in 1933 FIRST YEAR! I have no use for it but I've always wanted one.

Have been playing with a friend's custom .284Win based on a Rem 700 short action, KBI fluted 22" SS barrel w/Vais brake and an older Lee Six stock that is pillar-bedded. Finally got it shooting reasonably well with groups in the 1.43-1.56" range at 200yds. But, this thing is absolutely smoking fast. The reamer used was (mistakenly) a 284Win match reamer intended for long match bullets. Sooo, I have been seating the 154SST's and 162SST's at .025" off the lands (which will never fit in a magazine) in order to get better grouping. It also allows LOTS of powder and the loads are running a full grain or more over Hodgdon book max, but still aren't showing heavy bolt lift.

These are the final verification groups of a load that is slinging the 154SST at an ave velocity of 2959fps and that is true 7Mag performance. The final 2 shots at 200yds were 1" apart once we let the barrel cool fully to ambient temp.

I did fire 5rds of the 162SST at just over 2900fps at 200yds without the Vais brake and by God that little bugger stung pretty good. In this 7# rifle without the scope, it slaps a guy around pretty good.

I like SxS's. Purchased a LeFever Nitro Special 12 Ga. yesterday, probably re-blued and some preventative work on the wood to keep it from splitting. Hasn't split yet. Doesn't matter to me this is a 90 year old gun that I will take to the field and range. They just don't make em like that any more for less than real big dollars.

A friend just bought the new 16/116 FCSS Weather Warrior from Savage in 6.5/284 Norma caliber and handed it to me to play with Smile When he got it, he sent it off to have the full-size Vais brake installed on that 24" barrel. This is the model with the Accustock and Accutrigger. After disassembling it and tweaking a couple of things, I cleaned the bore, lubed everything, etc, etc.

Sized some Lapua brass and sat down to work up a load using V100 powder and a lot of WLR primers of known quantity. After gauging the throat, I determined where .025" jump would be with the Nosler 140 Accubond bullets. Interestingly, when the bullet is seated at that depth, the rear bearing band of the bullet sits about .05-.06" below the junction of the neck/shoulder junction in the case. That's a real good balance for max case capacity and bullet support by the neck. The box magazine fed the cases with the bullets seated like this very well and there was plenty of room to seat them out further.

After cleaning the bore and a manual bore-sighting from the bags, the first 3 shot test load went into 3/4" @ 100yds. Pretty encouraging. I then thoroughly cleaned the barrel to remove all trace of copper and lapped the bore with JB. Flushed and patched the bore dry and fired 2 fouling shots in the dirt.

Swinging to 200yds, I began increasing charges 1/2 grain per group. The rifle showed no sticky bolt all the way up to Hodgdon's recommended max charge (at 90F), but the accuracy and good ES numbers came at 2825-2850fps on the chrono. The groups ran 1.12-1.38" mostly at 200yds. Not too shabby for a factory rifle that comes in at its price.

Recoil of this 6.9# bare rifle was on par with a std weight rifle in 22/250 caliber. It was a real pussycat. After running the G1 ballistics, it should deliver 1500 ft/lbs at just shy of 400yds.
