2013 Two Rivers-Manitowoc Trap Nets

The commercial trap nets have been back in the lake since early April. Please refresh your knowledge of the markings and how to avoid them. Keep wire cutters close at hand to cut lines and down rigger cables if your gear becomes entangled in the net or one of the many anchor lines. I just heard that 2 of the trap nets came out this week. I don't have the specific locations for the two but they were the shallow nets. Be aware of nets and I'll post an updated map when I can. Titus Seilheimer Wisconsin Sea Grant

Okay so what the heck are they trying to catch?

As of August 7, 2013, trap nets are still in the locations on the June 28 map.

Trap net locations as of June 28. There are currently 16 trap nets in the waters off Two Rivers and Manitowoc. They are concentrated in the trap net zone (June 29 and Labor Day). Trap nets on the move. The trap nets in the Two River-Manitowoc area are being moved around right now. I'll get a new map out when they have them in more permanent locations.

I don't have any locations for Sheboygan, but the general territory to be cautious is south of 43 40.833N and north of 43 34.650N between 60 and 150 feet of depth. If I can get the coordinates, then I will post the maps. Titus Seilheimer, WI Sea Grant

Commercial trap net locations from June 3, 2013. Four new nets since last map (LC06, LC07, LC08, and K07) for a total of 15 nets. I've been told they will probably be moving around in the next week. Look for possible even more nets, as the November 2012 to April 2013 commercial harvest of smelt was like 1350 lbs. The only viable commercial harvest left is whitefish. The 1991-1992 harvest was 1.2 million lbs of smelt. I understand most of the smelt you see in the restaurants are from Lake Superior.

Good morning Titus: Would you have the positions of the trap nets off of Sheboygan. I looked on the site and found only the Two Rivers ones.
