I wouldn't do it. If you're going to go cheap, go cheap on your board rod holders, not your dipsy rod holders.
The way I see it...both the plastic holders or the "balls" are going to weaken over time (whatever that time is) regardless. So, whether you lose a dipsy set up or not, you'll likely end up buying rod holders twice.
Additionally, the tougher the seas, the more pull on the rods, the holder, and the frame you've mounted them to. Why not spend $80 on a big jon single holder? (some believe even those wear out in 5 years?)
NO they won't the ball on the bottom will not hold the power of a dipsey.
Horror story:
Two years ago...running 2 dipsies on each side. #3 dipsy had a fish that insisted on being net on the port side of the boat. Moved the #1 dipsy to the back of the boat in an empty cannon downrigger holder.
End of story: dipsy rod = gone. Downrigger exploded.
Lesson learned, don't put a dipsy in anything you dont trust.
