Hey all,

Just wondering how pounds test you guys normally use for fishing Kings. I lost two kings this weekend likely because of my noob set up. I was using alewives, had 15 lb braided line and 12 lb mono leader. I'm thinking that the leader was too weak. Do you guys usually use a mono line leader, and if so, how many lbs test?

Thanks all!

Yes sir that was me. I brought the girlfriend and her friend and all they did was sleep, not to mention her friend destroyed my $6.99 moonshine, paint is chipped off and pretty much destroyed. So it looks like I have to go back to Cabelas, try out that krocodile lure. Like I said on the racine post, had one hooked on the 3rd cast on that and somehow the lure got undone.

I lost about $15 in lures today by being stubborn and tying 6lb fluroclear to my spoons. Lesson learned.

Ovi nice!Hey was that you out on the pier this morning with the ladys sleeping and your friend had a cast or something on his hand?If so you might of walked by me and fished about 50ft away and then went back in closer.I had on my bone collecter hat and a packer t-shirt and walked back out when it was light out.

I'll be out again tonight. I went to Cabelas today since I had a 80 dollar gift card, couldn't find the Okuma rod or any decent surf rods.

So heres what I went with. A Cabelas Pro Guide 9ft rod. It was only $30. Check the pictures. I also bought 14lb Fireline Fused Crystal + 2 more moonshines Smile That all added up to 80.

Sounds good , I appreciate all the information you gave me. I'm Guessing west winds are good for Racine?? I'll be there tonight to give it a try and see how it goes. last time I was there I fished off the pier by the mouth of the harbor, is that not the south pier ? I'm going to guess its the one across.

Ovi 7ft rod isn't a bad choice, but the reason i like using a longer rod you can cast farther and it takes the fight out of the fish.As to your question about different lure action i think not since i can't swim next to my lure and see lol.You should be fishing on the south pier with these winds i only fished that one day cause the lake was rough and seen that they were boiling and chasing the alewives.I bought my rod at the fishing hole on east layton ave by the airport here is the # you need if you don't want to spend over $50.00 dollars CQ-N-902L-1 okuma i love the fight and the feel these rods give me.The rod taper is a medium and the power is light and the do sell the moonshine there too.@ BUGLE TROUT i used mono alot too until i got tired of untangling alot of my line and end up cutting it off.Thats why i switched to power pro or fire line crystal it might cost more but i still catch alot of fish too that why i use a double swivel on the power pro and go with a floracabon leader during the day since now i will just fish without it at night.

Grew up on Lake Michigan and all we used was 8 lb mono. Sure, you lose fish from time to time but we hooked more than most of the others out on the pier. Just make sure your spool is full!

luv2hunt&fish I do have to upgrade my rod, its a St Croix Triumph 7ft which is extremely short. I'm going to have to look into getting a new rod, maybe a 8'6 or even a 9'. What type of action, does that even matter?

I tried them last night for my first time at the Racine Harbor, I see you post on that page all the time. Hopefully I can make it out tomorrow night after I go get a new set up.

Just thought about this, do longer rods by any chance give spoons a different action?

Ovi don't know what kind of setup you have as for a rod and reel, but i use a 9ft okuma rod and my reel is a shimano sedona fd that holds over 200 yards of power pro 10lb test or i use 15lb test here is a chart.I do like to use a double swivel with 3ft of 12 lb test of flouracarbon leader. But i think that when i fish at night just going with no leader at all just a snap swivel here is my salmon rods and reels you don't need to spend alot of money to catch salmon my rod and reel together cost me under 100 dollars.I'm a big fan of the moonshine for three reasons you can fish them day or night and they catch fish Big Smile

I would recommend 10-14 lb mono (berkley trilene in a red box is my favorite) or what luv2fish said in 10-14 lb test. I never had much luck with braided, but everyone else seems to love it.

What lb line do you suggest ? Could my blue lines visibility be the reason for not getting any other hits? I see you are a huge fan of the moonshines, I'm going to have to get the Mongolian one as well.

Ovi fishing with cheap line on lake Michigan is not a good idea when you are paying $5.99 a piece for the moonshine lures. You want a good quality line buy power pro or Berkley fire line crystal.

Im using 10lb line (some cheap line i found in my tackle box) and it is blue. I was out tonight and only had 1 bite, nothing else. I just made a knot to the swivel and then used my Moonshine lure. Are they picky about visibility? Should I change my line or something
