Why is it that every time I go to a public launch I have to contend with someone who has no clue what they are doing? One time After fishing in the morning I get back to the launch, on lake winnebago in the big hole, and on one side of the dock I see a car and trailer in the launch, no boat or a person. I get to the dock and get out and look around and see a boat coming into the harbor. Didn't think much of it. Came back with my truck and trailer, just as two other rigs pull up to launch. I get my boat on the trailer and the boat I saw coming in behind me pulls up onto the trailer parked on the other side of the dock. This guy backed his rig in, got in his boat and went out on the lake without parking his car and trailer in the parking area!!!!!!!!!!! This launch is only a one dock two ramp deal. He had no problem with plugging one side with his car and going out on the lake! I'm sure we all have a few stories about jerks at the boat landings so here is a place to vent!

Heh, you describe them more politely then I do. Wink

Some of the stuff isn't totally obvious though, like it only takes a minute or two to unhook for launch, but it should be done away from the ramps. I've seen enough people do this I think some of them think it's the "right way". And there's a lot of variance in how far people pull away on take out to hook up, strip weeds.

Parking across all ramps is grounds to throw rocks.

Big Smile

J - the young lady I mentioned had an open parking spot almost directly ahead her.

I remember talking to a guy at a launch once who said it was his very first time launching a boat. He did not come from a "boating family" and none of his friends had a boat....He prepped his boat in an open parking spot. I asked him why - when other, obviously more experienced boaters were bulloxing-up the launch area with all sorts of stuff unnecessary to do in that area - why did he choose to get out of everyone's way to prep HIS boat?

He said it just seemed to be the right thing to do.

BINGO!

A complete greenhorn yet he will never be a BLI.

It's not really "boat launch idiots",it's inconsiderate jackbags who happen to own a watercraft. If they notice that they're unnecessarily holding up others, they don't care. If they don't notice,it's because they see nothing beyond what they themselves are doing. They live in a very small world. Population, one.

The problem is there are no rules posted, and unless someone taught you, it's easy to make bad plays like prepping in front of the ramp or filling out your ramp permit at first.

I'm guilty of this myself, but it would be nice if the seasoned boaters would politely point out things like this so the etiquette spread by civil word of mouth.

I always just leave them alone, not wanting to get in an argument and ruin my day.

This week - older S10 with jetski in tow blocking all 4 ramps to a local launch. One young lady behind the wheel, another standing beside the truck.

I wanted to pull my boat from the water.

I approached the truck. The girl in the truck said "If you can get around me,go ahead..." but that "there's no power steering in this truck. None". I didn't respond,I just got back in my truck and wiggled the trailer around her and into the water.

(I have a lot of practice maneuvering trailers around obstructions: Backing a big brush chipper into backyards.)

Anyways,I get the boat on the trailer and then see some guy approaching the truck from the direction of the bathrooms. He motions the gal from the truck, gets in and backs the jetski into the water without a problem.

I couldn't help myself: I told the young "lady" that she should have just said she was waiting for someone who knew what he was doing. That's all I said and how I said it....The words that came from her mouth in response would have made a prison inmate blush.

The other guy laughed...so did I....The look she gave HIM told me he'd be paying for his laughter all day.

Anyone check out the Delavan thread? There are some picture there that illustrate how not to launch the boat.

Can anyone give a story as to what happened?

I read a lot of complaining about this thread, but to me it serves a purpose...the more of us who read it, the more you realize that the ramp is no place to screw around. You might pick up a hint here or there to help you avoid launching issues. Last weekend in Kosh, 5am when only true fishermen are launching, a guys launches his boat, parks his truck, then proceeds to go to the bathroom and fill out his pass paperwork. All of which should have been completed BEFORE he got his truck in line to launch the boat.

It was only 4 minutes I had to wait, not truly a big deal, but the common sense of doing stuff before getting in line eludes some people.

Maybe that guy will read this, realize his mistake, and we all will benefit from his new-found wisdom. Or maybe the rest of you will realize you dont go take a whiz while your boat is tied off to a launch dock during peak launch/recovery times...

I've been launching boats for 22 years. I'm not perfect and can clearly state, without a doubt, that I've been a boat launch idiot a few times over.

Personally, I come here to read humorous BL stories. But, they are few and far between.

Boat Launching for me got a whole lot easier when my wife learned how to back up the boat. Easy on, easy off. I'm so proud of her as she picked it up really quickly!

Bean Bag. Our record at Lake Camelot was under 12 seconds. Back in, as the prop hit the water the outboard was fired and in reverse. By the time the trailer was cleared the truck was going forward and the boat was making a hard right at WOT.

Today while I was launching my boat and while I was backed in the water unloading my boat, this guy with teenage kids who were waiting in line behind me pulls up with his truck and blocks all three of the remaining boat trailer parking spots. Then they proceed to get out and start prepping their boat. So I yell over at them "where do you want me to park?" they just looked at me. So then I get out of my truck and walk over to them and said "you need to move so I can get out of the boat launch and park". The guy was like oh okay. Why couldn't this guy prep his boat out of the way like everyone else? I guess some people are just clueless.

DMR - you've got far less chance of being "that guy" if you just show courtesy to other people...Including the "other people" that might show up in a minute or five.

No-one's around so it's OK to park in the ramp to off-load your stuff? Ya,right. What about the guy who shows up right after you who's all ready to go?

I like the analogy of the people parking in the fire lane at the store....I once reamed out some guy who was parked there, waiting for his girlfriend and blocking the ramp off the curb. What caused me to hive him hell was an old lady stumbled off the curb because his car was in her way.

The last thing I said to him was "I hope you don't own a boat".

Now that I'm on that tangent: Driving 25 or 30 mph thru a crowded parking lot, taking a pedestrian's R.O W. at the crosswalks...also qualifies someone as a Parking Lot Idiot.

I only expect common courtesy at the launch, as well as everywhere else. Just like driving, grocery shopping and anything else in life, there is a way to do it courteously.

The able-bodied people who park in the fire lane at the front of the store bagging up traffic in the lot, or the people who seem to be clueless behind the wheel ( we have all seen them) zooming through lanes with their nose in their phone or the jet skis and pontoons that seem to think the boating laws don't apply to them.....all idiots in there activity.
