Yoter thanks for the reply.

Going in and out do you do it strictly on the ends or can you do the sides too?

I'm 230# and add a passenger a 12' sounds better.

Can you still toss it in a truck bed by yourself?

Thanks again.

Alex

I would go with jon boat. They are more stable when leaning over the edge to set traps. I started with a 10, but move up to a 12 as I got bigger (350lbs.). It's also easier crawling in and out.

Guys and gals looking for some input.

I plan to expanding rat trapping this fall to some endless muck bottom ponds up to 20ac in size and looking to purchase a Jon Boat or canoe to trap out of. Concerned on stability in both. Anyone have experience with 10' or 12' Jon and which do you prefer?

For a canoe any recommendations on brand / size?

For either crafts, would transport in back of pick-up truck so don't want to go big if don't half to. There might be days my child tag's along with checks.

Thanks everyone,

Alex

Well ended the spring beaver season with 14 total. Not too bad, considering the conditions... Nice way to close the season out anyhow.

P.S. only 1 incidental muskrat in all 15 sets we had out also... Talked to another local trapper who ran a much bigger route (80 mile) than us and he said he only had 6. Drought must have really taken it's toll on the rats.

If you don't want to wait for the trapping conventions this summer to buy traps, just order on-line from various websites. Shipping could be expensive tho.

If you like Korean made products, fleet farm and some Gander mountain stores carry Duke traps.

If you want to buy traps, I'd suggest you go to the FTA Convention in Marshfield on June 28th-29th.

1 large beaver last night... Sure hope it picks up in the next couple days or that 1 beaver is sure going to pan out to be 1 expensive beaver for the gas it took to get him!

Sarge,

TRYING to! Sure is tough conditions here in Taylor Co. yet. Still 2 feet of snow on the frozen rock hard ground, and severe fluctuation in water levels. Had a few misses so far, but nothing yet. Out to check the line again tonight, so hopefully that changes.

ANyone hitting the spring beaver this year?

Call me a realist but to me trapping success is measured in $$ NETTED!

I will vote yes on #76. The greater opportunity to harvest prime fur only makes sense. Going thru ice to get them is no easy task so I think the population impact will be minimal.

I will also be voting no on #37 which would have 'rats and mink open sooner which I think is wasting the fur as the critters just are not prime yet across the southern 2/3rds of the state.

Was wondering how many are in favor of proposition 76 at the spring hearing? It proposes to extend the muskrat season to March 31st statewide.

Here is the link to the FTA convention in Marshfield end of June. Lot's of great demo's now scheduled, all your major trapping equipment suppliers, lures, baits, etc.

http://www.furtakersofamerica.com/convention.html

I personally gauge the success of my season on many factors and not just the fur check at end of the year.
