Russian Boars
2/26/11 @ 7:32 PM
I just watched a show about wild boars. Reminded me of the Russian boars that were around Owen Thorp area. I haven't heard if they are still around. I heard about them being shot during the gun season about 7 years ago and one being 350 pounds. You'd think they would have greatly increased in sighting throughout the years. Maybe the bear and wolves took a few of them out.

Those are hogs from a lease near Woodville, Mississippi. Lots of them down there but are smart. Surprised got a picture of them during the daylight hours... Usually they are held up in the thick stuff or the young cut over. You can hardly even walk through that stuff. Sucks
There were also a few pockets of wild hogs over by Readstown, Mills area when I was in college a few years back. Actually around 7 or 8 years ago. Rumor has it a guy was releasing them or had some to hunt and they got loose. Even though hogs could do some damage I don't think they could completely take off. With the hard winters and snow cover I believe the DNR could shoot them out of helicopter and definately monitor where they are at.
Here is a picture of the young sow that my buddy shot. Lots of work but a blast! Weather is warming up now and too hot to hunt them. Anyone want to plan a trip let me know and we can get after them next October-February. Make sure you can climb a good tree or have an accurate weapon. Here's another picture of a buddy who fell out of tree and Mr. Boar gave him a reason to not mess with him.... Cajun
Had some guys come down to chase some bacon this past weekend. Weather was hurricane like and we were wading through the cypress swamp feeling like it was back in Vietnam holding our gun over our heads. We kicked up a few hogs but could not get a shot on them. We got to a couple of good bedding areas and set up on them before dark about a mile in the swamp. All that came by between the 4 of us was 3 doe and a good size swamp buck.
The next afternoon weather was even worse and 2 of us stuck it out. We stalked in some water and saw a large black animal running. Thought it was a hog and turned out to be an otter. Pretty cool either way. We found a good opening in swamp and set up about 1 hour before dark. As light gave away I saw a few deer coming out feeding in da bayou. Wooducks landing all around us. I saw movement on the far end of the opening and here came a large sow (200 lbs) and her piglet (30 lbs.) into the clearing. My buddy and I stalked about 35 yards to them and the big sow took off like a shot across the way. The piglet stood just enough for my buddy to get a bead on her.... BACON! What a fun hunt and crazy adventure in the Bayou! Cajun...
There are quite a few Russian boars down where I am outside of Baton Rouge, LA. Anyone interested in hunting them I offer hunts. Email me. I have guys coming down all February and March. April May are open. [email protected]
Darrink, I just had a student kill a boar at Superior Game Ranch. He said it was a great time and they were running all over the place up there. He also mentioned he only saw the fence twice (on the way into the ranch and on the way out). His boar weighed 205 pounds but I am sure there are larger ones there. Looks like a nice place to go for them...good luck.
