Thanks theimer. Me and daughter went up this morning and planted my rape/turnip plot. Added the mix in so we'll see how it turns out in a couple weeks. As of right now won't be heading back up until the 20th, unless I can make a weekday trip if it fits in the schedule. Getting to be that busy time with family and church functions. It says we're suppose to get some rain up there Wed-Friday so that should get the seeds going. Keeping fingers crossed.

i have used the powder stuff and the plants grew pretty good until it got flooded out for a long time and killed off my food plot. i can't tell you if it really helped but it didn't hurt any thing at all. i also used a deer deterrent because it was a small plot and wanted the stuff to get established before they used the plot and ate it to the ground.

Anyone ever use DeltAg Seed Coat Seed Treatment on their seeds before planting? Got a bag I bought last year I was gonna try out. Never got to use it last year and company said it's good forever.

EW is very easy to grow. It does like nitrogen though. I put in a strip of the stuff last year on some very sandy soil. In the poorer areas (nearly pure sand) it got to about 6.5', on the "better" soils (some loam) it got to around 9'.

Oh, and you're right lookn'.....I am one odd S.O.B.

Cheap, easy to grow, grows 10ft + tall, holds well into late Dec

Disadvantage - it is an annual and needs to be replanted annually

My 1st time planting... I followed these instructions to a T

Hope it works... as you know deer feel much more secure feeding in plots during daylight when they feel isolated + it gives you a screen to travel to stand sights when you have to walk around/past a food plot + it can be used quickly to prevent road poaching issues (I think you will be seeing it used this way a lot more in the future). EW adds instant thick cover on the borders of your food plots and sounds pretty easy to grow Big Smile

What are the advantages of the Egyptian wheat over switchgrass? Never heard of it.

"I like a mix of winter canola, forage radishes, hunter and winfred hybrid brassicas, and a little bit (less and less each year) of purple top turnips. Maybe throw some barkant turnips in there too (or seven tops)....."

Yes, but you are weird also!

QDMA - I agree with you, I wouldn't plant brassicas with clover - poor idea. I was saying a mix of brassicas within the same plot... not just rape seed

Rape is a brassica....if you want bulb or root then you go with turnips or forage radishes (also types of brassicas).

I don't add any type of brassicas to clover plots. Brassicas will shade out most anything else that grows alongside of them. Great fall/winter attractants and sources of nutrition...no doubt there.

Personally, if you want to grow brassicas then I'd grow them. Planting multiple broadleaf species together generally is counterproductive. You're trying to maximize yield and by planting them together you compromise that right off the bat.

If you want some DER, PTT's, GFR's, etc.....then I'd plant them (mixing brassica varieties together in one plot is "ok" due to similar growth habits and nutrient requirements). If you want a future clover plot, then I'd plant clover and a winter grain. Make two small plots if you want everything...much better chance of success all the way around doing it that way.

SplitGs - If it were me, I would add a variety of brassicas and not just rape.... check out the link I provided below... 17 pages of how to and different brassica mixes

Planting a good bulb\root producing brassica will give you more deer on the plot later into Oct-Nov when you want them to be there. Rape in my experience gets eaten earlier

thanks for the input QDM......If i added a little rapeseed in with that mix, would that be too many different plants? ......I've always wanted to put in some food plots over the years but thought that it was going to be to much work to start......surprisingly its been relatively easy with minimal work.....all I needed was an ATV, chainsaw, homemade drag to work up the soil, hand sprayer, and hand planter / spreader.....things that you would use on your lawn at home......fun work

splitG2...it's good that you "missed" the spring planting window for clover......spring planted clover is almost always doomed to major weed issues. You're much, much better off putting it in around the end of August or early September. Get your plot prepped well now (i.e. get the weeds and weed seed bank wiped out) and plant in late summer.

Plant it with a cover crop of winter rye or winter wheat. The grain will provide tasty forage for this year and will also give them food first thing next spring. Giving your perennial clover some protection from getting burned up by the sun and from being browsed too soon is another benefit of planting with some type of winter grain. You can either mow the grain off next year, spray it with a grass selective herbicide (like Select 2EC) or just let it go to seed. I usually just let it go.......
