I have the Gamo which has the tube under the barrel that breaks to cock it. (barrel stays fixed) Awesome gun. Had one sumer where we pounded that gun. Thousands of rounds. Ended up at the end of summer that the only thing that was challenging to shoot, was the fishing line we used to hang stuff with. Super accurate with a good punch. I have the .17 calliber. Also, whichever gun you shoose to buy, get a bunch of different pellets to try. I found the ones that shoot great out of my gun, shoot like crap out of my buddies. And vice versa. 4 of 5 shots on a dime at 40 yards with a broomhandle rest. Shot many rabbits (city)and they pretty much tip over if you hit them good. Had only one get away last year that i know I hit. Super fun gun, I highly recommend it.
Picked up a Sheridan 392 about a month ago at Gun World. I was tired of the break barrels having power but if you can't hit your target it does no good. I shoot this better with stock iron sights than Gamo or Beeman break barrels with scopes. If your a Starling or Cowbird at 50 yards you have a 50-50 chance. I will figure out a muzzle break and scope for it.
Grew up out in the country so when baby bunnies mowed down my city garden I tried the bb-gun on them. Watching the shiny bb's spray everywhere but to the intended target was a real eye opener for me. Borrowed my friends Sheridan .20 cal and, found the right lead pellet shot thru a rifled barrel, was so much more accurate that there is no comparison. Now I have a bunch of Co2 guns and some low and high end spring (break barrel) guns. My nicest gas piston springer is powerful enough for squirrels. Most of the pellet guns out there are capable of head shots for rabbits. Now I clean and eat them stewed with veggies from my garden.
It all depends on your situation. The Sheridan/Benjamin are great for shorter ranges. If you have a big yard and need to reach out a little the RWS series has some that crank out a .177 pill at 1100 ft per sec. I used that out to 40 yards but wind drift was a problem. I have gone back to the .22 rimfire with CB ammo. It is a subsonic round that has about 1/2 the powder of a short. It makes less noise than the pellet guns and is more accurate. I can see the bullet go out when the sun is right. With ballistic tables, I can dust bunnies out to about 65 yards. The neighbors cheer me on. I only shoot from the second floor sniper's nest. I think the much heavier slug from the ..22 bucks the wind better and retains more energy.Happy Hunting. Mrt.
