Rabbit Hunting Areas
1/5/13 @ 4:19 PM
Hi folks,
I now own a beagle who I'd like to take out rabbit hunting but, the few areas I've taken him to have produced no results(lots of tracks/sign) but no rabbits have "popped out" ahead of me or my son. I know he has good instincts as the rabbits in our neighborhood keep him barking & excited when they show themselves(and have nearly torn my wife's fingers off when one takes off by the roadside when she's taking him for a walk). Is there any public hunting areas in the Dane County area that have a decent population of rabbits? I've hunted areas like Brooklyn, Stoughton, Oregon but I'm wondering if there are better areas I should be taking him. Thanks for the help !!

Go on a warm, sunny winter day. Bunnies will be out. Also, if he is not a "jump dog", you may have to bust some bunnies for him. He does the chasing, you may have to do some stomping. Some dogs dig into the brush and seem to know where to go, while others need a fresh scent to follow. Some dogs do both. It takes quite a bit of time to figure it all out. This is coming from a first time beagle owner who also hunts public land. Good luck, and don't let the beagle get fat!
