Just wondering if its worth buying a vacuum seal for meat and fish. I've heard a few guys talk about them. Does it save on freezer burn? Where do you buy one and price? Anyone have any recommendations. I have plenty of fish and meat that might be worth it. -cajun

Dido with the fish and ziploks. just don't use the sliders. They will leak. I have had bad luck with the foodsaver machines. When they worked it did great. I like to wrap the meat individualy in suran wrap then vacum seal. This allowed me to take out a steak and re-seal the bag. This did save on the bags.

We use a Foodsaver and have zero complaints. The meat lasts a lot longer when vacuum sealed then it does any other way. My only complaints are that the bags seem pricey, but if you look around you can find good deals.

Like lakeshinner i freeze my fish in ziploced water works great! I do freeze smoked salmon in a foodsaver works excellent!!! Here's the tip for freezing vension steaks. Put em in the freezer for about a half hour first just enough so they firm up that way you get a nice tight seal with no air, doesnt affect em at all works great. Bags are pricey but venison aint cheap!! if you knw what I mean. Its the way to go if you try to save some from season to season.

I use a vacuum sealer for my venison, but I freeze my fish in water. Fill up the bag with water, zip it 75% shut, push out the air bubbles and as water is coming out, finish zipping it. I've had fish that got lost in the freezer be good after a few years, no problems. For a vacuum sealer, I don't have the actual FoodSaver, but it works just as good. The big thing is using quality bags for it, the cheap ones just bring problems. I reuse all the bags, can get 3 or more uses out of them depending on what you store in them.

i love my food saver and use it on fish, birds, and lots of veggies from the garden. However, I don't use it on my deer. It would work great but I find double wrapping the meat in plastic wrap and then one layer of freezer paper works just as good as the sealer at preventing freezer burn. I guess I find it faster to wrap the meat and I just like the delicious little white presents in my freezer.

I use the ZipLoc vacum pump and bags. Cost about $13.00 for the pump and bags. Put meat or fish in bag, zip shut, put pump in designated spot and pump out all air.Yuo can see all the air leave as the bag molds itself around your meat. Money is tight, so I With this product and the results I get this is all that I need.I found some ground venison in the back of my freezer from more than a year ago and it was perfect.

I've always had luck using ziplock bags and water. Clean your sink and fill about half full with cool water. Place whatever you intend to store in the correct size bag and fill to just cover the meat with fresh water from the tap. Submerge the bag seal-side up in the water you have in the sink and jiggle to get all the air pockets out. Zip the bag almost shut, leaving about an inch unsealed and then invert so that the seal is on the bottom, all the while keeping the bag submerged in the sink water. Slide the inverted bag up and to the edge of the sink, allowing the excess water to drain from the inside of the bag. If your opening is too large, air will rush in, but if it's the right size, the water will drain and the bag will compress around the meat. After a few tries, you'll get a sense for when to complete the seal while the last bit of water pours out and before air can get in.
I do this anytime I freeze something, including ground. No freezer burn whatsoever.

Food saver for sure. If I spend all that time/money obtaining the game/fowl/fish I'm going to freeze it well. Off brands are cheaper for a reason.

For my fish, I will put them in the vacuum bag and start to freeze them once they are getting hard then I seal them up (it helps reduce the water that gets sucked into the machine). I also put some paper towel on top of the fish, to absorb some of the water. I love my vacuum sealer for all my wild game.

You cannot beat a good vacuum sealer. Food Saver is what I have always owned. I have learned it doesnt pay to buy cheaper brands or cheap bags for it. Spend the $$ on good quality, thick bags and you will be amazed at how the meat and fish keep. If it is sealed correctly, there will be NO freezer burn. Biggest trick is making sure whatever you are sealing is as dry as possible.

I bought the stand up one from Walmart. I vac-seal fish, chicken, venison, summer sausage, jerky, pre-cooked meals....just about anything. It does and excellent job. If you shop around online you can buy bulk, pre-made bags pretty reasonable. labeling stuff works best if the bag is dry. I usually label the bag before I fill it and I use a permanent marker.

I used a vacuum sealer for a while and went back to hand wrapping. Vacuum sealed packages are great, except- they are delicate when I dig around in my chest freezer, the plastic gets nicked open, I have a hard time labelling them, and it does cost a little more. I went back to bagging the meat in 1 gal. thin Baggies and then wrapping in freezer paper. Lasts just as long or longer and I can read my writing.
