Florida Fishing - Need Help!

I would like to take my son to Florida for his graduation and do a charter. Plan on flying into Orlando and driving south. Have never done it before. Would like to experience some unique (for us) fishing for tarpon, dolphin, permit, etc. Since we could only afford probably a one day charter looking for some advice. We would want fast action on light tackle....preferably in relatively calm waters. Anyone with any experience with this? Thanks

I have a brother-in-law that has a condo in Islamorada (the keys) we have fished the sailfish tournaments and fun fished for years. Depending on the time of year that you are there, fishing for some migrating through might be better. Also we only fish on the Atlantic side, not the Gulf. So there are a ton of charter boats waiting to go almost anytime of the year, except maybe the big holidays. My suggestion would be to have dinner and a couple cold ones and wait for the boats to come in. Don't commit to the first guy that has some fish check out a couple. This time of year the Mahi Mahi migrate through and are a blast. also make sure to Yellow tail snapper fish for some smoking fun. I'm lucky to spend about a month down there a year, once around Christmas and once around March. So the size boat is the next If it is calm and it usually is this time of year a 34-38' is enough. The bigger they are the more they cost. I would try for two days one day Mahi and one day Yellow tail and bottom fishing. Watch the weather and stay away on smoken hot days, with no wind it can get hot. Even a half day Yellow tailing and bottom will work. Last Dec we broght back eighty pounds of fish and had a huge fish fry. That bring up another thing, the charter boat like to keep the fish and sell them, tell them you want to take it all if you want it. We freeze it and put it in a cardboard box cooler and it is fine when we get back to MSP. Oh yeh Tarpon moving through now also, they fish them with a bobber off the back of the boat like we do, Just alot more pull at the other end than we see. Not sure about the sails this time of the year. Just keep asking around to find out what is happening. Man kinda getting me excited, anyhow thats my two cents, Have a blast!!!
