I'm planning a trip to Montana in early July 2012.  I'm hoping to be able to do some fly fishing for trout for a few days, but it's very overwhelming to try to figure out where it would be best to go.  Does anyone have any tips or recommendations?  Not looking for specific rivers (although that would be helpful if you're willing to share), but any general tips like what types of water or general locations would be best that time of year would help me narrow my search.  Probably not looking to hire a guide, so I'm realistic that I probably won't slay them or anything but I'd like to catch a couple.

I'm looking more in the southern portion of the state, within reasonable distance of yellowstone (within a few hours).  Hoping to rent a cabin on or very near a body of water and be able to just fish on my own when I have time.

Again, any advice would be great.  I'm hoping that a few of you have been out there before.

WARNING! If you go to Yellowstone, you won't want to fish here anymore!

The Gallatin is great fishing, I have (share) a place in Big Sky, the fly shop Gallatin River Guides in Big Sky is great for guides, information and goodies.. If you stay in the Northern part of the park or Big Sky or as far north as Bozeman you will have access to tons of places to fish. Look at or around the small town of West Yellowstone if not Big Sky, Three fly shops in the town of West Yellowstone, Blue Ribbon flies, owned and operated by Craig Matthews is fantastic, as is Bob Jacklin's shop and Bud Lilly's shop. Take your pick. They will all have excellent up to date information and recommendations that will tell you the best options happening in real time. If you do hire a guide, which is a good idea, any of the shops have excellent guides that would be well worth the money. That area has access to streams in the park (special fishing License), and North of the Park. All great options. It also has access to the Madison (NW) which is best floated but can be wade fished from the Slide Inn down stream for quite a ways. Be careful, there are some pretty dangerous areas to wade there. Check with the Slide Inn fly shop owned and operated by Kelly Galloup for conditions and recommendations, again, an A #1 shop. The Gallatin from the Northern Park Exit all the way to Bozeman is very fishable and a great option. I know it well and can even give you specifics on where and what to use (flies) depending on time of year. West Fork of the Gallatin outside Bozeman is also good, but Stream access is tougher and tricky unless you are with a local or someone in the know. The Missouri for fishing would not be my first choice with so many better choices (tribs to the Missouri) for first and second choices. The Bitteroot may not be a bad option, but is hugely dependent on weather and stream flows, so it can be hit and miss.

I could go on for hours without specifics.

As the trip gets closer let me know and I can dial you in. Locations and dates (for flies) and stream flows.

Pictures are of a Brown and Rainbow from the Madison Downstream from the Slide Inn.

Dave - thanks for offering to help.  We're pretty undecided on specific locations for yellowstone.  Basically we're splitting up our 2 day trip into 2 portions - one where we'll travel through yellowstone (and probably stay at 2 or 3 different lodges in the park for 2 nights each) and one where we'll try to rent a cabin on a river where we can relax and I can get some fishing in.  One cabin that I've found is on the upper west fork of the bitterroot (5 hours west/nw of yellowstone, while I've also looked at options on the missouri (3 hours north of yellowstone) and the gallatin (1.5 hours north/nw of yellowstone).  The only area I'd probably rule out is anything further north than the missouri as it would be a lot of extra driving.  The gallatin near bozeman seems ideal geographically, but i don't know much about the fishing.

Hope that helps...and thanks!

PP2..

There are tons of places to fish..

It would be good to know where you plan to stay, Yellowstone is huge, it is best to know on the Northern or Southern area of Yellowstone.  I am very familar with Montana and can give you specifics on where to go (you will want them)..

Provide a bit more information and I can point you in the right direction.
