Call me stupid, but what is having puppies to fund further training called then? You're taking money that you wouldn't have (profit) and using it to buy something you couldn't otherwise afford. Maybe I'm missing something here... I don't care who sires the pups, without your female offering anything in the way of any titles the pups aren't worth much more than $300. She has some good dogs in her pedigree but its not like its littered with NFC/NAFC/FC/AFC all the way back. Heck there are pups all over the place with both sire and dam having a grhrc and mh titles that go for $600-$800 all day. Then again there are suckers born every day... Wondering

I think you will find it is not the money maker you think it might be. I have a good friend that has done all the hunt tests in the hrc system and is just now seeing the benefits of his labor. Just because your dog is from a good pedigree doesn't mean you will get top dollar, most high buck lab people want the immediate parents to be titled, more than just entry level training. If you do decide to breed her I would get money down commitments from all the people who are "interested" just to make sure you don't end up with a litter of pups and no buyers. I wish you good luck with your endeavor and hope for the best for you.

JMTied, the doodle thing I said was sarcastic. I know it's hard to do that right in type though. I laugh at all the "designer" breeds out there now. 10 years ago they were "free to a good home" now they are $1000+ a piece for a mutt!

l know some of them dogs in her pedigree good dogs. just make sure to do eic .and all the other health clearances. maybe your trainer will take a pup for training. if you go with dougs and leslie dog take a look at bond I got a pup out of him and I cant be happer with her very smart and easy to train catches on very fast. I would still what to train her maybe even get a title on her would make selling the pups easyer just my 2 cents

First off I applaud you for asking all the right questions about clearances and wanting to do them prior to breeding. The other info on here is completely accurate, breeding s that are done for financial gains rarely result in such. Breeding should be done to better the breed (which sounds like it is your intent), but timing may not be right. My personal 2 cents is that if you don't have the finances for 3 months of training then you are putting yourself at financial risks with the potential complications of breeding. Does your female bring a strong pedigree to the table (FC, AFC QAA, MH titles)? What value of stud do you have in mind?

Lab pups are relativly cheap especially for just a standard one like yours. No offense but you didnt say it's a champion or any special blood lines. So you might get $500 per pup and lets assume 5 pups that $2500. $500 for a stud fee, figure $120 for progesterone tests, $50 for STD tests on your dog (because no owner of a quality stud is going to let his male breed to an untested dog), $200 for shots for the puppies, warming pad, etc. and you will be over $1000 in expenses assuming there are no complications with the pregnancy. If there are complications and she needs a C section plan on spending $600 - $1200 for that among other things. For my French bulldogs I figure about $3000 for a letter before a puppy is even on the ground, really sucks when you only get 1 or 2 pups! If all you're doing is breeding them to make money I think you will find that it's not the money maker people think it is. If you want to make money breeding dogs go get a male poodle and breed it to any female and call it a doodle something or another and sell them for $1000 a piece!
