Manion Lake

I just booked a five day stay at Hyatt's Manion Lake Lodge, from August 5th - 10th. I was there a few years ago in June as that is where we ended a Boy Scouts canoe trip. We fished a littlle there so I know there are big Smallies and abundant Walleye. Can anyone share any other info. We are not into fishing much but this is a birthday present for my son and I think this might just get him hooked on fishing. Do I need special permission from my wife to cross into Canada with my son? I know we needed it for the scouts. We are bringing our own boat and any tips on live bait versus artificial would be appreciated.

Graceonpoint,

Yes, this will be my 32nd year going to Hyatt's Manion lake camp.
The difference is, all those years have been at Hyatt's outpost camps which are located on the boat-in,7 lake chain. Gives the feel of a fly in, with the comforts of my own boat.

Fishhook, do you always go to Manion?  I take one 2 week trip and had been going to the same lake and lodge for years.  Last year decided to mix it up spent the first week at the old standby and then pull the boat out drove a couple of hours and spent the next week at a different place.  We really enjoyed the change.   I wish we had been doing that for years, and that is the plan going forward.

Ontario,Canada fishing trip 3 of 3 in the books this year.
(June13-21)(July17-25)(Aug 20-27)

Better late than never for this report.

We had nice seasonal weather when we arrived, and throughout our trip while at the outpost camp.

Overall, fishing was good as was the weather,& lack of bugs.

The water temps were 69°-72° this time of year.
Water levels were a few inches above average.

Walleyes (good)were schooled up on mid lake structure. Jig/live bait was productive with minnow or crawler being the best bait in 14'-26' of water.(big walleye,26")

Pike(good)we didn't target them, they were caught while fishing walleyes. (big pike 24")

Smallies(good)were suspended over 25'-40' of water, feeding on schools of bait fish, or bugs. Top water, crank baits,& tube jigs were the choice,(big smallie was 19")

Lake Trout(fair)trolling spoons with a 3oz or 4oz snap weights at 2.2-2.4mph in deep water(120')  Most trout were suspended in 40'-80' of water.(big lake trout was 23")

Still a lot of bait in the water for this time of year.

Back up in 2026!

Ontario,Canada fishing trip 2 of 3 in the books this year.(June13-21)(July17-25)

We arrived to a perfect weather pattern, high temps in the upper 70°'s and lows 50°-60° range. Winds changed NE to SW 5mph-25mph every few days.
One morning of rain, accompanied with thunder/lightning which made for a longer sit in the screen porch after a breakfast of eggs, bacon, hash browns,& toast.

Fishing was fair/good as water temps were 68°-70° this time of year.
Water levels were slightly above average.

Walleyes (fair/good)were scattered on mid lake structure. Jig/live bait was productive with leech or crawler being the best bait in 12'-18' of water.(big walleye,26")

Pike(very good)were everywhere, and were a nuisance! (big pike was 24") we didn't target them this trip.

Smallies(good)were suspended over 20'-40' of water, feeding on schools of bait fish,& bugs. Top water,& crank baits were the choice,(big smallie was 19.5")

Lake Trout(fair/poor)trolling spoons with a 3oz or 4oz snap weights at 2.2-2.4mph in deep water(120')  Most trout were suspended in 40'-80' of water.(big lk trout was 24")

Still a lot of bait in the water this year.

Ontario,Canada fishing trip 1 of 3 in the books this year.(June 13-21)

We arrived to a perfect weather pattern, high temps in the mid 70°'s and lows 40°-50° range. Winds changed NE to SW 5mph-20mph every few days. One day of rain, accompanied with evening thunder/lightning which made for a nice show while sitting in the screen porch with adult beverages after a meal of grilled steaks, potatoes,& a veggie.

Fishing was fair/very good as water temps were cold(60°-62°)this time of year.
Water levels were 6"-8" higher than average.

Walleyes (poor/fair)were scattered in transition and hard to pinpoint as water was 60°-62° when we arrived before warming up to 68°. Jig/live bait was not very successful as the walleyes were not on mid lake structure yet in any numbers. So trolling spinners/live bait was more effective(big walleye,24")

Pike(very good)where everywhere, almost a nuisance! (big pike was 32")

Smallies(very good)were scattered over 3'-10' of water, feeding on schools of bait fish,& bugs waiting to do "their thing". Top water baits were the choice,(big smallie was 21")

Lake Trout(very good)trolling spoons with a 3oz snap weight at 2.2-2.4mph in deep water(120')  Most trout were suspended in 40'-80' of water.(big lk trout was 26")

A lot of bait in the water this year.

Canada fishing trip 3 of 3 in the books this year.(Aug 23-31)

Crazy weather patterns we had. High temps were either 85° with S.W. winds ,or 65° with N.E. winds most of the week. A few days with rain,& one day accompanied with thunder/lightning.

Fishing was fair/good as water temps were somewhat normal (70°-73°)this time of year.
Water levels were 5"-6" lower than our July trip. So about average for Aug.

Walleyes were scattered on points,& mid lake structure. Fish were caught from 18'-26' of water with 1/4 oz jig,& live bait.(minnow,or half a crawler)

Smallies,& pike were scattered over 12'-100' feeding on schools of bait fish.

Trolling spoons with a 3oz snap weight at 2.2-2.4mph for lake trout in deep water(120') was fair. Most trout were suspended in 40'-80' of water.
We also caught suspended walleyes, pike,& smallies while trolling for trout.
