Well got out to the swamp this past weekend and actually got out a little late but for once it actually paid off. I headed towards my stand when I was walking thru a clear cut when I heard some twigs breaking. I got behind a tree and watched around a dozen russian boars come out and feed. I took a shot at the lead one and let out a squeel and ran into the woods. About 75 yards later I found him laying. Great hunt! - Cajun

Headed out to swamp for first pig hunt of the year. My friend came down from LaCrosse. We had a blast. Great food great action and lots of fun... Had a few opportunites but wind was not right. We ended up stalking up on 4 pigs.. a few crazy colored ones, a black one, and a white one with few spots. The closest one made the wrong turn!!

Getting to be that time of year ago.. Weather cooling down in the south.. Mosquitos slowing down, chiggers hiding, and the copperheads, cane rattlers, and cotton mouths are hanging low... Yep HOG SEASON!!

Headed out this weekend to look for hog sign and checking their usual wallows and hang outs for some of these good eating critters.

Still crying from the missed opportunities elk hunting last week but time to get over it and move onto hog season.. Hopefully I will have some good pics of some sign, tracks, wallows here shortly.

Anyone have questions or interested in doing a hog hunt message me sometime... Cajun

Billy B and Backwoods- That is a very good question. I have lived in Wisconsin for 25 years and was always intrigued with wild boars and hunting them. The last 4 years I have had the opportunity to hunt them and you guys are right. There are a few WMA's (public hunting) that I hunt down in Louisiana that are LOADED with hogs. Yet you cannot hunt them most of the year and have specific weapons you can use, etc. etc. Also I have tried to get in and hunt them in certain private lands. They all told me I needed to get on a lease. Around Baton Rouge average yearly lease price is 1500-2500 per year. If you call and go on and want to hunt them guided down here is average $250 per hog $500 trophy hog and they are fenced in! They put a corn pile out put you in a stand and they come running in! After tipping guide, pay for skinning and cleaning, you will run close to $1000. Thats why I have been offering guys hog hunts down south. Good affordable hunts for true wild boars. It's a challenge but most guys who put in the time and effort are well rewarded with a nice wild hog. Message me if anyone wants a little bit more info. Cajun

backwoods- the same question has been posted over on archery talk quite a few times and I have yet to hear a good reason. Every year there will be guys bit**ing about their hog problems and anytime someone asks if they can come down and hunt they are turned away. Its almost like they like to have something to complain about. I dont get it either.

i am just curious on one thing. Wild pigs cause over $1 billion in damage every year, the farmers hate them and they are a big problem and we need to drastically bring the population way down. With that being said after looking at some hog hunts why are they so expensive? You would think that they would almost be just making you pay for room and board and basically handing tags out left and right. Or am I missing something?

Best time to go hog hunting down south seems to be around February March April. May the weather starts getting extremely warm and the hogs seem to mostly feed nocturnaly. Also they just lay around in wallows in thick stuff most of the day. Biggest problem also is the snakes come out thick. I have seen rattle snakes, copperheads, and cottonmouths all in one day. Also chiggers tend to be an issue and they are not all that much fun especially around the groin area!

During 3 months I mentioned earlier the water levels usually gets high and swamp rise. Usually the hogs are concentrated along the acorn ridges high ground and you can catch them feeding during daylight hours and they can be stalked real close. What a blast and very addicting outdoor adventure. They can be taken with bow or gun. Bow needs a good shot placement lower behind shoulder than a whitetail cause they have a scar tissue plate that is tought to puncture. If shot is not direct or fatal they can turn pretty quick on you. I have had to run up a tree more times than you would believe. Sows are extremely protective of their young and will give out a warning call and they will all take off through the underbrush with the bat of an eye. I will have some pictures of my hunts coming up here shortly.

Anyone interested in hunting these tusky creatures message me and can work something out. --Cajun-- Smile

Best place I have hunted and still live there is in Louisiana. They are in the swamps and up in the hard woods. I have shot over 20 in the 3 years I have lived down here after moving from Wisconsin. What an exciting heart pounding experience! Way more exciting than whitetails and also better eating. Come on down for a trip of a lifetime. Good food, great hunting, great experience. Message me if anyone interested.
