Am I the only one who has seen a big decrease in the number of deer we see gun hunting in the area north of Iola on the old Tigerton Lumber Co land and state land. The number of deer seen goes down every year. In fact, the last two years I have not seen a deer on opening day and the number of shots in the area compared to other years is way down. Unfortunately judging by the opening weekend registration numbers Waupaca lead the totals again and was up over last year. What gives?? Wolves?? Public venting feels good.

I haven't been on the site in awhile and just found this thread. We have a large chunk of property in Harrison/Wyoming. About a mile from Mud Lake Rd. I know the area well and also know most of the long time residents of the area. I would be happy to answer any questions you may have. PM me if you want specifics on what the area produces for deer each year.

Davidtaco, you wouldn't happen to be talking about the 35 or so acres on mud lake rd would you?

Davidtaco, based on what you are looking for I would then say that this area would be for you. If you were looking to shoot any buck, I would have suggested elsewhere, as there is heavy QDM going on here and you wouldn't want to be wasting tags on small bucks when there is a good opportunity at nice bucks and plenty of does if you want some meat. You'll see more deer than Tomahawk and the age structure of the bucks will provide you with a quality experience even if you don't get a buck. I had a great season even though I didn't get a buck. Seen plenty of deer, got a doe with a bow, and passed on some real nice bucks. Like I said, QDM is heavy in this area and if you would purchase in that area I would suggest getting to know the neighbors and people from the local deer management groups. They'll help you get the most from your propery. We have learned a lot from some of the people in that area and have a very solid program going. Feel free to message me if you want any more info on the area. Stop in at JR's in Big Falls for a beer and take a look at their picture books. Our group has put a few pictures in that book.

Well I've been hunting tomahawk my whole life and we've seen good hunting and bad over the years. but i have a daughter that is starting to hunt and i would like her to be able to see more than three deer in a week of hunting like i had when i was young and the hunting up north was good. It would also be nice to have a chance at decent size buck. i will practice quality management. but to see deer and have good chance at a nice one would be good for her. this year i didn't even raise my gun i am mostly hunting with her now but to see the excitement in her when she sees deer is enough excitement for me.

Davidtaco, what are you hoping to get out of your hunting experience? Are you looking for brown its down type hunting? Do you want big bucks? Are you looking just to see a decent amount of deer? Are you looking more for harvest or more for quality hunting? I have land in the town of Fairbanks in Shawano county, which touches the NE corner of the town of Harrison. I know the area fairly well, so I can let you know if you are going to find what you are looking for there.

I hunt near norske on the northern side of Waupaca Co. On opening day of bow hunting i saw alot of deer and as the season went on i saw less and less. Where we are there is alot of pressure mostly 80 acre plots. On opening day of gun season i only saw 4 all day 3 of which were fawns. That is the least amount i have ever seen on opening day. In the last few years we have a ton of pictures of coyotes even in daylight. This year we have a pic of a coyote on a fawn. I think with all the food they have foodplots baiting etc. combined with the hunting pressure they really get nocturnal. I feel very lucky to hunt in waupaca county and not in some parts of the state where the DNR has mismanaged the heard.

We lease a peice of property just off highway Q (between 54 & 10) thats southern boarder bumps up to the river.  This year the deer numbers were WAY up (compared to the last time we leased it in 2009).  Honestly saw on average 20+ deer per day of hunting (the last time we leased it we saw less that 5 if that).
