How are the deer doing up north tis year. I'm sure we are loosing soem of them by now. The only good news is deep snow came a bit late this year. Anyone finding any dead ones in the woods?

I found three dead ones in northern Washington Co. Surely from winter kill.

On the interstate today between Lodi and Madison, saw as many snowmobiles heading south as I did boats.

Nice opening day of fishing season. No fish at all and the river was really high. So what do you do when the fish don't bite with 7" snow on the ground? Ya scout deer. The deer we saw looked really good, no ribs sticking out at all. They should be good around Price county.

rikj - I thought I saw it in the last article or so of WON but I don't remember off hand what it was exactly. I want to say they weren't considering it all that bad, it was better than I would have guessed. Around moderate or something like that. Maybe it got bumped up at the end now, not sure.

went to Florence this weekend. saw a lot of deer, some where pretty skinny. but I didn't find any dead deer or bones. some of the does might of absorbed there fawns this year, but a lot of them look good. a lot of the snow was going away. the woods was probably 50/50 between snowy areas and bare ground. it looks like a good number of last year fawns made it through. it was high 60s this Saturday. if this weathers keeps up the deer will be fine.

The deer had it tougher this year by me in the U.P. Quite a few less fawns seen between February and now. Still alot of healthy deer around including quite a few does carrying fawns. It doesn't hurt when they have a few ton of corn to tide them over for the winter.

http:// http://www.channel3000.com/sports/recreation/long-winter-stresses-deer-herd/-/4046/19905630/-/j6sl3mz/-/index.html Not a very specific article. Deer are plentiful and looking healthy by me, but I am not that far north.

Anyone have a winter severity index chart/map for this year in Wisconsin? I did a search and found nothing recent for Wisconsin. I also looked at the WDNR website and came up empty.. Thanks for any information........rikj

I was turkey hunting in Adams county around Hwy Z and Hwy 21 during first period. I had 5 deer walk past and they looked really skinny! There was nothing green in woods for them to eat. Hopefully the warm weather this weekend helps get things growing. Dave

I'm more worried about the Turkey than the deer in my Area of Northern Sawyer County- deer look good still and I have not heard of any winter kill unlees it involved Coyotes and wolfs- Turkey on the otherhand are flocking to feeders- the flocks in the areas that have people feeding are most likely OK- but those that dont have a feeder could be hurting with the crusted 6 inches of snow buried under the 15 inches on the ground still.

I had some maples come down in a storm . They are budding out and the deer striped off a lot of bark . Super hungry or is it just sweet ?
