Mollasses on oats works OK. You will have a lot of other little 4-legged critters there too.

You can purchase liquid smoke in bulk at most bait dealers, or jello powder has a nice smell to it. That just gets dumped on the stum. I've looked at the commercially produced spray scents and never got any just due to cost. Theres a lot of scents out there that work as well and are a TON cheaper. Remember, you'll be working with volume of whatever bait or scent you use.

Tie a rag or old sock in a tree or branch that you can pull down, soak it with your scent, and let it go. I've used vanilla too, as well as the smoke

Bassfreak - I baited and filled my first tag last year. Not claiming to be an expert, but here are some of the scents I used. About a week before opening day I started using some scent purchased at a fishing bait dealer--- up north. I bought about 4 different pint size bottles, each a different flavor. This seemed to work pretty good, but at $8.00 per bottle I decided to try something else. I went to the dollar store and bought a spray bottle. I also bought a bunch of flavorings from the spice isle... anise, liquid smoke, peppermint, and several others. Fairly cheap and I could spray high up in the trees. Each day I would saturate a different tree close to my bait station. The different scents must not have been too bad of an idea, because I filled my tag with a decent bear the first day. Due to the situation, I had to bag the first shooter that came in. I wanted to wait for the big one (which i had on trail cam) but family health issues forced me to rush my hunt.... my advice... try anything and everything... I know bears love blueberry pancakes...Dollar store $1.00 box of mix. Made about 15 pancakes every night for two weeks.... lol

anything with a loud smell- but we as humans have a different definition of loud smell than bear! So choose something oily, that will keep smelling and not be washed away or evaporate. Peanut butter is awesome. It does attract just about every critter that has fur though. I don't know how "homemade" you want to stay...Liquid smoke is an old standby too.
