Mathews Monster MR7 or Z9
2/24/13 @ 1:06 PM
I need a new bow because my draw length has grown to a 31" so after shooting soem bows these two are my options.... I know the decision is ultimately up to me but I want some opinions.... Which would you go with? Im torn between the two. Do I want shorter ATA and a bit lighter or more speed.... That I do not know forsure.....

My neighbor had the same dilema. Very hard time choosing between the two. Actually called Mathews for help. He also went to BK3 in wind lake and got the same response.
He is a hunter, that is his main use. Shoots a lot but not a league shooter.
He was told the Z9 would be a better choice. Its a little more forgiving and he only has one cam to worry about in the future for tuning. There would be less for him to worry about.
He bought a Z9. He loves it. He feels confident and feels he is shooting great.
I bought my MR7 last spring and love it. I tried out the Z9, and other brands, before I bought my MR. I have not regretted my choice at all. The z9 may be shorter ATA but it is much slower then the MR7. The draw cycle on the MR isn't as smooth as the single cams but after I shot it for a little while I don't even notice. As you said, you need to shot them for yourself but, don't get to wrapped up in short ATA and sacrificing a little speed.
If you have a 31" draw you are obviously a big dude so a smaller bow while hunting isn't as big a deal for us taller guys because we need a little more space on stand anyways. Also, you have a 31" draw, so (IMHO) buy a bow that you can use your long draw to its full potential. Just for reference, my MR7 is at 70#, 31.5" draw and sending my 500gr Easton Axis 300 at 300fps.
Good luck with your decision and let us know what you do.

My hunting rig is the exact same bow as my target rig (nice having 2 of them. Im a long ATA guy, I like somewhat smooth but also like some speed, my buddy has a Z9 and its nice but really slow.
While the MR7 may draw a bit stiffer then the 9..its still a nice drawing bow. Longer ATA but not to long to cause a issue in a tree, xtra speed will give you more opportunity to shoot a little heavier arrow and still get some speed out of it.
think my buddy shoots 28" about a 360 gr arrow??? but not sure,60# and gets about 250 and some change out of it.
Good luck in your decision.
