Was reading a thread on another forum and it was based around the use of 3-wheelers for ice fishing. Whats your thoughts? My intentions are to have a vehicle lighter than my car to help get onto the ice quicker/easier. $ is why im not looking the 4-wheeler route.

the lake I live by there are 3 atcs out there every year. One pulls a huge permanent shack around with a wood burning stove in it. He uses chains unless the snow is really deep then the snowmobile.

I will mention that the red one has studs (1/2" X #8 tek screws) and that seems to be a better setup. Great traction on the ice, and much LESS weight. Its just an idea.

Yes correct size. They stay on for me incredibly well. Here is what I did. I am a commercial heating guy. At work we use 3/32 cable to hang ductwork. We also use a 'coupler' called a gripple. I used 3 or 4 to 'tension' the chains. Works great....and if there were to ever loosen up, you can just tug on the gripple to snug it up. I know its not readily available to everyone, but was convenient for myself.

Better than floating at the bottom of the lake bed.

Travel on ice at all isn't safe. But when I don't feel like walking it I use my Big Red with chains. If there is so much snow that b. Red can't make it I'll walk, with or without snow shoes. If you handle the 3 wheelers with respect they're safe enough. Too many lawyers in this world anyway.

With chains a 3 wheeler is excellent. Most of the older hondas float also just in case you break through the ice.

there is nothing wrong with a three wheeler for ice-fishing. if u get off the beatin path ya might want to stay away from the deeper snow or drifts. cool thing about three wheelers, you get stuck and you can push them right out. the only time there unsafe is when u have a six pack or so and forget that they only have three wheels.big red is the way to go.

I had a 3 wheeler for 8 years and with chains it would go thru alot of snow but if the depth was over about 10 inches you could only go on trails. The 3 wheeler is only tippy if you don't know how to drive it, I had a rack in the front and back and also pulled a 3 man shack. I had a 1985 Honda 200s and never was stranded the thing always started on the first or second pull no matter how cold it was. Only reason I got rid of it was I found a 4 wheeler for 500 bucks looking back I wish I never would have sold it. Remember anything beats walking. Oh ya the 3 wheeler only weighed in around 250 pounds as compared to a four wheeler that is anywhere from 450-850 pounds.

been there done that twice and both times it failed miserably! I would not trust a three wheeler no matter what They are not 4 wheel drive to begin with and also they tip easier than a cheap prom dress falls off a girls shoulders! There is a real reason why they are no longer made and that is they plain and simple are nto safe at all! Save your money til net year and buy a 4x4 four wheeler to avoid and time energy and money I lost in buying two of them and not learning my lesson Gary
