AUGUST, what a great month, not only for limits of Walleye, also a couple of, TRUE, HOG Walleye as posted now and a few days ago.

We are working hard and producing limits of Walleye, during the middle of the day.

We are doing this with serious effort, our success is not that easy. As we focus on water environment, location, technique and presentation.

Simply put, learning the method and presenting the bait with proper boat control is part of our success. The other factors are also relatively easy.

Even after the paint is chewed off our jig's, we continue to produce.

Does color make a difference? I believe it does, at certain times of the day.

Just ask Trout fisherman, they will tell you, FROM THE SMALL STREAMS, TO THE GREAT LAKES.

Plain lead, has and will always be, an important color.

EXAMPLE, how many of you have been panfishing, used a spilt shot, hook, bobber and a piece of worm, casted it out in mid July, to your favorite Lilly pad spot and have actually seen the Blue gill hit the split shot before the worm???

On a continuing positive note,('PLEASE, SUPPORT') our fishing guide BROTHER'S AND SISTER'S and fishing CAPTAIN'S on the gulf coast who are suffering due to the oil spill.

Come on along and we will discuss fine dinning locations and the best resorts.

As always, stay positive, think clearly, do not listen to negative talk and do not listen to negative people.

GOD BLESS.

Patterns seem to be changing. Weather remained fairly warm (hot) this past week pushing surface temps back into the mid 70's, but there have been plenty of signs of weeds starting to die back a little. There is a cool down coming for this weekend with Friday being the coldest then warming back up. The high pressure didn't help this past week, maybe the drop in temps will spur some activity.

Musky: Fair-Good. Best action very early am or late pm. A 51"er was caught this week on a sucker. Most action on surface baits, shallow running jointed cranks/twitch baits up in shallow of 4-8'.

Perch: Fair-Good. Work weeds of 8-10' and around cribs using 1/2 crawler on 1/32 - 1/16 oz jig, casting same jigs with 2" chartruse twister to locate small schools then fish live bait. Nice "eaters" of 8-10'.

Largemouth Bass: Fair-Good. Evenings - early am best this past week. 1/8oz jigs with 4" worms, 3" twisters over/through weeds. Plastic frogs early/late still producing some as are Hula Poppers/Jitterbugs. Plunking plastics (Senkos, Beavers) also producing.

Walleye: Fair. Move to gravel humps occuring. Work 1/8 - 1/4oz jigs tipped with large fats, 1/2 crawler in 18-26' depths.

Bluegill: Fair. Despite an 11"er caught this past week, action is down as fish harder to locate. Flowages producing 9-10" fish in heavy weeds, but a good catch is 6-10 fish.

Crappie: Fair. Work weed edges in 14-18' for fish holding at bases. Use small jigs, minnows.

Smallmouth Bass: Fair. Maybe a temporary hic-up, but fish left many typical rock/gravel humps. Check out sandgrass flats. Use soft shell crayfish (frozen), crawlers or Carolina rig chompers skirted grubs over grass in 18-22'.

Pike: Fair. this species will probably respond well to the cool down coming. Cast 1/4-3/8 oz spinnerbaits over weed flats. Jig/Float chubs in sam 6-10' areas.

Fishing seemed to slow quite a bit, high pressure hurt (maybe it was Mars coming so close to Earth) Make note for 2000 years from now "Mars Bad Fishing". Actually the transition to a more early fall pattern is occuring, things will improve as we get into September.

FISHING WITH THE GUIDES

by George Langley

Much warmer weather than last year has been in evidence for this last part of August. This is good for the fishing, as we hope for a decline in the water temps in September. Last year, the temps actually went up in September, which really put a damper on our musky and walleye efforts. You will also notice that it is much greener than last year, as we have had enough moisture this year to keep thing green. Nevertheless, the maples are starting their journey towards full color. Lake levels are better than last year at this time by far on many lakes. If we have some moisture and a good snow cover this winter we'll be in much better shape next summer.

Walleye fishing has been on the upswing in the last two weeks, with the start of some fall patterns evidencing themselves. On the larger, clear lakes we are seeing a good bite in 15 to 20' of water on the sand. Jigs and minnows are working well now, with the successful anglers dragging those minnows right along the bottom. On the Chain, we are seeing the start of some action in the holes, with good action on the edges of the holes in 15 - 18'. Jigs and minnows are working best here also, but some anglers are still using half crawlers with some results.

Bass fishing has been pretty good, with the largemouth still in the green weeds and hitting spinnerbaits and plastics well. Smallies, on the other hand, are in the middle of changing to fall patterns. They are feeding much more on minnows now, especially when they can find them on those rock bars the smallies love so much. The crayfish die out in the fall, so they need to change their feeding patterns for the fall.

Northerns are hitting very well now, with the best action being in the weeds as it has been all summer. They are hitting on all noisy or flashy bait, and they are hitting well on larger chubs. Many are caught at this time of year by musky anglers accidentally.

Musky action has been surprisingly good. They have been locating all over the place, and are still feeding nocturnally. The daytime action, however, is improving as time goes on and will continue to get better when the temps drop. In September, they will spend a lot of time in the weeds.

Panfish action has been good, with a definite improvement in the perch fishing in the last week or so. These good sized perch are locating in the deeper weeds and hitting minnows best, but will also hit leeches or crawlers. the bluegills are still in the weeds and hitting waxies or worms best, while the crappie have moved a little deeper and are hitting minnows.

Fall can be a great fishing period, so we have a lot to look forward to.

Good luck and good fishn'

Hi, just got back from the best lay off ever. Fished the Big tournament in eagle river, what a nice tourney very well put together cant wait for next year. It seemed for me most fish were on the weed lines being dark water 7-9 feet or clear10-14ft. But had small feeding windows. Mainly follows until the 'majors' came in then they grabed the lures. mostly bucktails got one 48.25 my best from one of the big lakes in the north east part of vilas. had one on the dock that grabed the buctail when i put it in the water to get wet before casting that was weird? All in all was a great time beautiful lakes and the water is finaly up!!

Fished a small lake in Vilas County with a buddy over the weekend. Found the crappies to be very active in the top 5' of the water column in depths ranging from 6'-20'. Most fish were caught deeper. We were using mini-mites, but caught some on jig and minnow along with slip bobbers.

We took home around 60 fish. The first 50 came saturday, and sunday we kept a couple nicer ones and threw back at least double our limit. Overall, we had a great weekend. Catchin' crappies sure beats working.

P.S.- Please don't message me and ask for the name of the lake. I'm not telling Lips Sealed

THE ANGLERS CHOICE GUIDE SERVICE

As we continue to produce Walleye limits during the day time, the past 4 days, with different clients, each day, the jig and minnow, continues to be our best producer.

Yes, you will, catch them, at different times of the day and night, with different bait, we simply, are continuing to do it, in the middle of the day time, as these photos continue to show.

As water temps are still in the mid 70's, we are still working the weeds and deep logs and mid lake humps.

As reported, in past postings (of mine) deep is relative to your water environment, some lakes are only 20 ft. deep, some are 80 ft. deep. So fishing deep in the day time is dependent apon where you are fishing, such as, is there a thermocline in your lake? Is your lake deep enough to have a thermocline? Some lakes that are relatively shallow only have a thermocline in the deepest part of that lake. This is an important and critical concept to our success. Water color is a next critical concept, and the biggest concept for us, during the hottest times of the year is current.

Clearly, these photos have been showing that day time is still one of the good times to produce Walleye.

On a continuing positive note,('PLEASE, SUPPORT') our fishing guide BROTHER'S AND SISTER'S and fishing CAPTAIN'S on the gulf coast who are suffering due to the oil spill.

I am planning a trip up to Boulder Junction the second week of October to do some musky fishing. Just wondering what the time frame is normally for the lakes to turn over up there. I assume most should be done by then but just wanted to make sure.

Thanks for any info!!

THE ANGLERS CHOICE GUIDE SERVICE.COM

As previously mentioned, I would discuss, Perch, well, we are working perch with small crappie minnows. Also leeches work well on a slip bobber, of course there are those that say, red worms are the best, so you can decide, but we use crappie minnows.

We cast them out and let them sink down, about 10 TO 20 ft., then reel them back in slowly, wait for the slight tick or bump and set the hook.

Does this work? Well, yes.

Weeds is the big key, for us, now, tomorrow I may fish a lake that is in the mud flats, with no weeds and we will still produce the same big perch.

As previously posted, (in the past, on lake link, or fishing info.com) almost, every lake is different.

Each having its own special needs, from the fisherman.

Six inches of rain hit the Lakeland area filling most of the lakes and flowages to full and beyond (some lakes like Katherine, Big Muskellunge, Clear will need more). The rising water levels affected the bites on the Flowages and some of the lakes. Once things level off the start of the early fall bites should begin. Water temps dropped and a lot early last week (low 80's to high 60's) but are now rising in to the low to mid 70's. Lakes with traditional algea blooms are seeing lots of greening, while suddenly higher water levels are leaving and but more "water" to fish over weed tops.

Smallmouth Bass: Good. Deep water fish less affected than shallow (LMB). Humps and breaks of 18-34'. Drop shotting 2 1/2" Gulp Minnows, 3" Senkos to well as 1/2 Crawlers on frozed soft shells on 1/8 oz jigs. Smallies at these depths seem to be feeding heavily on small bait fis so small tubes, jigs should work as well.

Largemouth Bass: Good. Slowed from previous week due to cooler weather and rain. Surface bite backed off, but plunking plastic working. Also casting 3" Twister Tails on 1/6-1/8 jig heads also affective.

Yellow Pearch: Good. 1/2 Crawlers, Medium Fats in 8-12' weeds. Soft shell Crayfish (frozen) over 14-22' sandgrass also working.

Musky: Good. Not great action but fish in mid 30 to 40 " range working weed beds. Bucktails best, Jointed Smity Cranks and Surface Lures towrads weeks end.

Bluegill: Fair-Good. Slowed with cool weather early in week. Preling up with warmth.

Northearn Pike: Good to Far. This species actually reached better to cool off. Boonie Bait Spinnerbaits, Johnson Silver Minnows, Daredevels over weed flats.

Crappie: Fair. Return of consistent weather will bring these fish back to 8-12' weeds.

Walleye: Fair. Best on deep lakes. Shallow lakes and flowages were affected by rain

FISHING WITH THE GUIDES

by George Langley

As we are slipping into the fall patterns, we are still going to get some warmer weather. Not like last year, when we had all our fall weather during the summer. We have, at this time, some rather cool water temps compared to a normal summer. Warmer than last year, however, and higher water levels. This rain received last week was enough to really help some of the lakes, but again, the seepage lakes almost seem beyond help in many cases. Water sports in general will slow down now and the lakes will revert back to being the playground for anglers. Every year, the fishing for many species is very good during the fall period and we all eagerly wait for this time. We are already seeing the early start of some color on some stressed trees, and the green tint on the maples is starting to lighten. It should be a great year for fall color. Can't wait!

Walleye fishing has improved somewhat, especially on the Chain in the last week or so. These fish are all over the place, from the holes to the weeds. The best way to fish on the Chain is to start in the weed areas and, failing to find fish there, moving deeper to the hole edges. Jigs and minnows are starting to produce again - another clear indication of fall. The larger lakes are also starting to produce, both in the weeds and on those deep rock bar areas. It has been a tougher summer on these lakes, especially during daytime hours. The fall fishing, including larger fish, will be much better on these big lakes.

Bass action really took a dip in the last several weeks. As we have been a little bit on that temperature roller coaster, we have felt the fish were just reacting to that. The other thing about smallies - as the crayfish die away they will start to search out minnow populations, and thus disperse somewhat from their summer rock bar habitat. Largemouth have remained in the weeds and are still hitting well on plastics and on surface baits.

Northern action remains good to great and they are still hitting well in the weeds. For those who would like to try live bait, just slip bobber with redtail or creek chubs along deeper weed edges. A lot of these fish are caught especially by musky fishermen throwing bucktails in the weeds, so that tell us what to use for them as far as artificials go.

Musky action is pretty good for this time of year. Some decent daytime action has been reported throughout the area, and this pattern will strengthen during September. The night fishing for these fish remains good and will be the same for some time now.

Panfish action is a little slower as the water temps decline. The bluegills are still in the weeds and still hitting, but as the summer goes on their numbers are reduced by anglers and natural predation. Crappies are hitting in the brush piles and deeper weeds on minnows. Perch are locating in deeper weeds and are hitting well on leeches and minnows.

What happens with our fishing from this point forward will depend on weather - if we get cold fronts, expect walleye and musky to hit. On the other hand, warm fronts will bring on the bass and panfish.

Good luck and good fishn'

Late report but still better than nothing. Fished the first week in August in Vilas and Oneida Co. Fished for Walleye, Smallmouth, Lg. Mouth, Crappies and Bluegill.

Walleye: Key for us was to fish evening/night on weed edges in 8-14 feet or on rock bars. Crank baits and jerk baits were best with a few on leaches. All but one fish were legal and ranged from 17-25".

Smallmouth: Again on the weed edges, breaks or the biggest fish came off rock bars. Fish were active and hit crank baits. Biggest fish caught were at night with one at 20".

Crappies were scattered and could not find them concentrated in any one area. Key seemed to be the weed edges in 12-14 ft of water on small jigs and twister tails. I did take a few on crank baits fishing for Walleye.

Nor rain, nor wind, nor scorching hot sun, has stopped my clients, this summer, from producing limits and trophy sized (Walleye, during the day time).

We are still producing our limits on (a, jig and minnow).

Has every one produced trophys, no. Has every one produced limits, %90 of every one has, in the middle of the day, between 7 AM. AND 4 PM..

As these photos show and the last 4 postings, have shown, we are doing, in the middle of the day time, what some are saying, only can be done, at evening, or night, or at 5:30 AM.

My guests, have requested to catch Walleye, (during the daytime), not at dark, this is what we have been producing, as the last few posting photos and these posting photos are showing to you.

As previously posted, dark green and plain lead is leading the way for the jig and minnow.

Regardless of our Walleye catch tomorrow, I will show and tell, our big perch catches of now and the past few days, for the next posting.

It is Friday morningand cool at 58 degrees and raining here in Eagle River and the start of the 25th National Musky Tournament... Some 1100 people will take part and spread out over 7 different family of lakes they could register 100 fish over 34 inches and maybe 49 inches as the largest like last year...It is all CPR and artificial baits............It is a fund raiser for the Musky Alliance Clubs of Wisconsin to help the fishery and other projects. The Eagle River Chamber of Commerce helps organize this event and is well noted for there efforts......one of these 1100 contestants will win a Ranger Boat or other prizes.........Weather wise it is raining this Friday and lots of thunder storms rolling by........ Surface water temp dropped 10 degrees the past 2 days and could have an effect on the bite........I talked to other guides fising the Eagle Chain and its slow with not many fish in the slot. perch and gills are being more co-operative as you have to vertically fish in the weeds ...and an occasional Bass .......I will be on duty today some where on Catfish lake my home waters... Good Luck and have fun fishing..........www.hi pinesrecreation.com
