Fishing Reports:
No problem. March is awesome Pike fishing. The warmer the weather the better the bite seems to be. Bring your sunscreen!

thanks for the info tipupsonly!
You will need tackle that is capable of handling 40+" fish. Hate to have the chance at a big one and lose him because you weren't set up properly. More importantly you need the person setting the tip-up and pulling in fish to know the limit and strength of the line/leader. Don't be affraid to let them "run." I like to use 30-60 pound tip-up line with a some sort of quick strike rig. Having 2 trebles is key when using big bait. I like red #2 trebles. I like to use 6-12" suckers. Hook them in the mouth and the back. The bigger the better if you can keep your flags from tripping. I'm not much for dead bait, but I know a lot of people that are. FYI many cheap leaders will break at the swivel points much easier than than 30 lbs line will. Setting hard into a 40+" fishing swimming away from you can easily result in a broken leader/line.

were thinking about coming up mid march. Was wondering how you would set up for trophy northern? bait? Leader? #line?

When is the best time of the year to fish low for walleyes.

Walleye season is open til april 14 up here so you will definitely be able to search out some walleye. i would bring portables up and search for them when fishing gets slow in the sleeper(if it does at all.) i am originally from hudson, so i know what you mean as the options dwindle down there in late winter. march-april fishing on lotw is awesome, lots of options here. i usually concentrate on pike because you will catch the biggest of you life up here if you are willing to work for them. and the walleyes are usually hitting on the reefs or stacked up somewhere down by pine island.
Depend where they have you set up. If you are somewhat shallow there may be some Northern activity. March is a great time for Pike. Pretty much anywhere can hold them in 6-15 fow.

I had a question, me and a couple of buddies had a trip planned to come up to Adrian's resort on Lake of the Woods the second week of March. We are staying out in a sleeper shack, and was wondering if we could still fish for walleye and northern? I live in Hudson, WI and down here you are pretty limited to fishing panfish. We catch and release, but we were curious about that situation. This is our first trip up there, and we are really looking forward to it. Any other helpful pointers would also be appreciated. Thanks!

Any of the resorts mentioned below are good places to start. Here is a link to the baudette chamber of commerce, http://www.lakeofthewoodsmn.com/resorts.asp, lots to chose from. I would give any of them a call. I stayed in a wheelers point sleeper last feb, beautiful six man shacks. They set us up in 17 feet of water, fishing action was real good from 3-8pm.

We fished Zippel Bay shacks early last week and the action was rather slow in the deep freeze. Whiteout conditions made it hard to travel but we caught enough for a few meals. Stop sign jigs in glow red worked best. Released a few slot fish as well and enjoyed the igloo bar they have out on the ice.

Just got back from LOTW. We used Arnesen's Rocky Piont and had a great trip. 120 walleyes, 60 sauger, 10 perch and 2 eelpout. Only 3 slot fish, but a lot of nice eaters. Ed was our guide and a great kid who works hard for the fisherman. 28-32 fow. From Madison Wisconsin area, pm me if you need details, 10 hour drive from here.
Fishing was slow to start the week, but has picked up with the stabilizing weather. Fishing out in 33-35' of water off of Pine Island has been producing good numbers of fish. Saugers are out numbering Walleyes, but there is a good mix and it depends on the day. A 60" Sturgeon was caught in one Border View's houses yesterday. What a fish! Many of the Saugers are running 9-12" but those 14-16" fish do show up. Walleyes are consistently running "eater" size in the 14-18" range with a slot fish here and there and occasional +28". Tullibees have been pretty regular for guests fishing with an occasional Eelpout and jumbo Perch. Overall, lots of fish being marked, you just have to coax them into biting the past few days. Glow red/pink and the Lake of the Woods standard of gold lures have been the most productive. Lots of snow on the ice making offroad travel tough now. The slush is all but disappeared now, which is good.

Just finished up the annual trip to arnesen's last week.
Ended up keeping 30 Fish. 8 walleye (14-18") 8 Sauger (11-14") and 14 perch (all over 12"). Caught and released many more including a 27" walleye on a dead stick rod.
Key to success at LOW is noise. You need to pound the mud to attract the fish, once they are in the area, dead sticks are killer. Caught many fish on them this year and wouldn't go without them. And of course, buck shot rattle spoons are a must.
As always the folks at Arnesen's treated us fantastic. Their fleet of 26 Sleeper shacks and 60 plus day shacks make them the preferred choice for me. Their policy incudes moving shacks everytime a group leaves a sleeper, and they will move any house if that house is not catching fish, or you request a move.
