Big Hook Wilderness Camps Fly in 185 air miles north of Red Lake, Ontario to one of our remote outpost cabins, located in the spacious grand wilderness of the Opasquia Provincial Park. Big Hook offers the most remote housekeeping outpost cabins in Northwestern Ontario, Canada. Avoid the crowds and enjoy an entire classic Canadian shield lake to yourself.

Big Hook Camps is a remote Canadian destination that is perfect for those who want to escape the high tech world. Located in the boreal forest, the Opasquia Provincial Park, 1.5 million acres of true beauty, is a unique, unspoiled, road-less area. We are the only operation in the Park. No cars allowed, the only way to access this unique park is via float plane. As a matter of fact, the nearest road is over one hundred and fifty miles away.

Among the spruce and birch trees are bald eagles, black bear, moose, osprey, otters, wolves, minks, martens and of course, an abundance of fish. Also, the wolverine is rare species that inhabits the Opasquia Park. Numerous biologists have visited to study and analyze this territorial animal. Sparse sightings of woodland caribou have been documented throughout the years.

THE CHOICE IS YOURS

Choose from one of 7 secluded outpost cabins strategically located on pure, clean wilderness lakes where your fishing party will be the only group on the water. Walleye, northern pike and perch are abundant in every lake throughout the Opasquia Park. Averaging over six miles in length, our lakes offer diversity of structure and habitat, providing anglers plenty of bays, channels and open water to explore. From photo worthy waterfalls to scenic terrain each lake grants fisherman unique opportunities. Enjoy the camaraderie of preparing a classic Canadian shore lunch. Fresh fish has never tasted so good.

CENTRAL LAKE MAIN BASE CAMP

Big Hook Wilderness Camps - Central Lake The hub of Big Hook Wilderness Camps, Central Lake provides its guests with continuous electricity generated by three windmills and eighteen solar panels. Here you will find a shower, sauna and guide service. Central Lake is known for its slender channels running north, south, east, and west in the shape of a plus sign. These narrow channels provide plenty of cover for fisherman on windy days. The approximate size of Central is nine miles long by six miles wide. Average depth is thirty feet accompanied with numerous shoals and expansive weed beds. Four scenic rapids spill into Central, while one exits. Boats and motors are available on all of the portages. This allows you to explore many great fishing holes and experience miles of true Canadian boreal forest. Fish stay active on this lake all summer long thanks to the large amount of water flowage.
COCOS LAKE
Big Hook Wilderness Camps - Cocos Lake Fed by the Sagawitchewan River , Cocos Lake provides over 12 miles of navigable waters. Several breathtaking rapids are located on the east and north ends of the lake, providing excellent fishing opportunities. Boats are able to navigate through the east rapids and this opens up 25 miles of river system to fish. This tea stained lake has superb trophy northern and walleye fishing with several excellent spots located within a quarter mile of the cabin. It can be noted that all the water from the Opasquia Provincial Park flows through Cocos Lake providing water depths of up to 80 ft! Numerous and large weed beds located in the Sagawitchewan river yield many 40+ inch pike. Abundant poplar growth surrounds a cabin-situated approx. 100 ft from the lake.
WEST LAKE
Big Hook Wilderness Camps - West Lake West Lake is situated in the center of the Opasquia Provincial Park. This body of water can be distinguished as two lakes in one. First, the "fish bowl" to the south, is a bowl shaped area with shallower depths. The shallower waters allow temperatures to warm up early in the spring for exciting pike action. The "fish bowl" has vast sprawling weed beds and numerous feeder creeks. The second half of the lake to the north harbors deeper holes and fishable submerged reefs. Two scenic rapids spill into West Lake, while one exits to the north. Numerous guests enjoy classic Canadian shore lunches next to the 20 ft. waterfall due east of camp. There are two portages available, one to the S.E. of the cabin and the other due east of the cabin. This outpost is a must for all trophy pike fisherman.
SOUTH WEST LAKE
Big Hook Wilderness Camps - South West Lake Southwest Lake is a lake composed of long narrow arms. This lake offers some of the most prolific walleye fishing in NW Ontario. These slender channels offer plenty of shelter to anglers on windy days. Southwest Lake offers miles upon miles of scenic untouched Canadian Shield forest and rolling cliffs. One of Big Hook Wilderness Camps best outpost for viewing wildlife, especially moose. Spring northern fishing near the feeder creeks provides nonstop action. You do not need a guide to fish these waters, fish seem to be around every corner. There are also numerous islands, bays and reefs that harbor massive quantities of walleye. Great fishing spots in Southwest Lake are just a short drive away from a cabin centrally located on the lake.
SOUTH LAKE
Big Hook Wilderness Camps - South Lake South Lake is a long slender lake of 13 miles, always produces the largest walleye of Big Hook's outposts every year. This narrow body of water allow fisherman to avoid the wind and focus on the task at hand...Fishing of course. Several weed beds near the camp offer good northern fishing. Anglers will also find amazing walleye fishing within sight of camp. Windy points and shorelines are great places to catch your limit of walleye in minutes. South Lake is a walleye fisherman's dream body of water,known for sprawling rock reefs and deep holes. Average depth is 32' with areas of the lake reaching 75+' deep. One scenic rapids spills out the north end into Central Lake. A short walk to below the falls yields exciting walleye fishing and amazing photographs.
BURNT LAKE
Big Hook Wilderness Camps - Burnt LakeThe most remote Big Hooks outpost camp offers not only excellent northern and walleye angling, but also tremendous perch fishing. Several sand beaches line the shores of Burnt Lake where shore lunches and the viewing of beautiful sunsets take place. One rapids flows out on the north end of the lake providing excellent photo opportunities for bear and angling for walleye. Also, moose sighting are common at the creek draining into the south end of Burnt.
FAVOURABLE LAKE
Big Hook Wilderness Camps - Favourable Lake This oupost allows guests to fish two lakes from one location. Located on a narrow isthsmus, this outpost overlooks a scenic Lemonade Lake. Favourable Lake, located behind the two cabins, is a short 75 yard walk away. All of the water from the Severn River flows into Favourable from the south and exits the north end of the lake. The abundant feeder creeks located throughout harbor unlimited trophy pike in the spring. Walleye and Northern can be caught under the huge Severn rapids all season long. Numerous sprawling weed beds make for excellent trophy northern fishing Mid-Late summer. Lemonade Lake is one of the best walleye lakes in NW Ontario.

THE CABINS

Our housekeeping outpost cabins are adequately equipped for a pleasurable wilderness experience. All staple foods are supplied and all cabins have hot and cold running water, with showers. All cabins have communications to the main camp. Our outposts are open from mid-May to mid-September. Screened in porches at the camps allow guests to enjoy the scenic views.
