Free Kids Fishing Derby

The Great Divide Ranger District of the U.S. Forest Service once again invites young people to the free Hayward Kid’s Fishing Derby on Saturday morning, June 1st at the Lake Hayward City Beach and Park. The park is behind the Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame at the intersection of Highway 27 and County Hwy B. Registration starts promptly at 9:00 am with fishing and the other fun derby events continuing until noon, when the prizes are awarded. Youth, from those just old enough to hold a fishing pole through 15-year-olds, fish along the shore for Bluegills, Sunfish, Crappies, Yellow Perch, and Northern Pike. The derby includes a casting contest that is broken down by age group. While winners of the casting contests and fishing competition are awarded special prizes, all youth registered who fish will receive wonderful prizes compliments of our generous sponsors. Although paticipants are encouraged to bring their own rod and tackle, loaners will be available on-site coutesy of the WI DNR. Terminal tackle and worms will also be provided on-site if needed. Guides from the Hayward Bass Club will be available to assist with methods, locating good areas, and fixing the inevitible tangle. Local youth fishing legacy advocate Frank Pratt will be on hand throughout the event teaching youth how to make dynamite fish baits. Refreshments will include the traditional derby milk and cookies.
