Mostly because the smelt are attracted to the lights on the ends of the rigs,it attracts them and concentrates them in the beam where they're scooped up by the rising net. I'm not sure but they may do most of the spawning at night also, but we've gotten them at all hours. Also it's a good reason to party!! Arrrriba!! Not many smelt around anymore gotta go to ashland and sein 'em to really get any sort of quantity.

I have not seen anyone trying, but the road is open. They are working on the bridge mostly at night of course...which would make it a little tough. As of right know they close the road from just past the first left between the parking lots. So you could fish the first part of the red railing or behind the sail loft. They close it Monday trough Thursday I am not real sure on the hours. It is at night though. Hope this helps.

I heard they still get a few up by port washington, not real sure. Best to watch the water temps. about 38-42 is when the smelt spawn. I plan on trying it south of there starting around the first of the month. I have done well the first week of april in the past just didnt load up on them like we used to.
