Did fairly well on smallmouth bass on Manitowish Lake even though the water was so warm. Also boated a good amount of keeper bluegill and sunfish and one nice crappie. Biting on most anything you throw on them.

Not a report, just sharing a photo from the 51 bridge on Easter morning. Could be open by now.

mmautobody: You can check out area campsites here:

http://dnr.wi.gov/forestry/stateforests/sf-nh-al/pdf/NH-AL-map.pdf

As you will see, there is also a campsite on Sandy Beach Lake, not far from Manty Waters. Not sure what Laughing Loon is talking about with boat landings on the Chain but all landings are fine if you have ever dumped a boat in a lake. There are also 8-12 Public campsites on the Manty Chain itself but they are only accessable by boat/canoe and tent camping only.

You can rent boats in Boulder Junction or Greers pier. If you camped at Big Lake or Sandy Beach Lake you could always rent a small fishing boat at Greers and take a day trip or two to do some fishing on the chain. They rent all types of boats including small fishing boats.

mmautobody,

There are no public, or private, campgrounds on the Manitowish Chain. For this system, it is either a day trip, or get a resort cabin/vacation home rental...Or buy a place. :O

There are good State Forest Campgrounds in the the area. Big Lake, and Gresham Lake, are two that come to mind. Another issue with the Manitowish Chain is public access, especially for larger boats. The best public access in at the Manitowish Town Park, on Rest Lake. The Island Lake access is on the Manitowish River, just up from Island Lake, and requires negotiating a bit of shallow river with vegetation, stumps, and a rock bar or two. The Wild Rice Lake landing requires negotiating a big culvert(Called The Tube), and two long sections of the Trout River. The Clear Lake landing requires negotiating a shallow channel to Fawn Lake, and some hazards in Fawn Lake. You can land at Greer's Pier, but there is an outrageous fee charged. But it is a nice chain of lakes once you get there. Big Smile

mmautobody. The state of Wisconsin has many campgrounds in Vilas county you should try. There are two on Trout Lake, one has a beach. You can rent a boat in Boulder Junction next to the gas station. They have boats on many lakes to choose from.

Hi Folks, I have never been to the area but would like to find out where to camp ( 20" pull behind camper ) & fish. My Wife 4 year old daughter & I would like to catch some pan fish or a walleye would be fantastic. A recommendation on a lake would be really appreciated, along with any other information.... We are planning the trip on September 2 - 8. We would need to rent a boat & motor. Mike from Madison mmdmiy@aol.com

Just got back from fishing Clear Lake on the weekend. The bluegill fishing was very good all weekend. Many are small but some are able to be kept. The lake seems to have weeds out to 17-18'. and the biggest gills were in the deeper weeds or edge were there were no weeds. Perch were just outside the weeds on bottom. Gills were about half way down to the bottom, above the weeds. Grand son is only 9 and he tried a few casts for bass but only caught one. We did get a few crappie too. Had a great weekend. We only kept 33 for the three days we fished. We used just a True Temper hook with gulp covering the hook, and a split shot.

well, we're on a cabin on alder lake, on the north part of the trout river. one of our neighbors said he caught a 21 inch northern just up the river, but south of us is also supposed to be very good for walleye, musky, or northern. on clear lake on the north bay you can catch a ton of panfish, and some bass, we have also seen 40"+ northern just sitting down in the water, but they dont bite. its north of the bridge to get into clear, its just a bay of weeds. i also have a few other spots in mind, many are really good for kayaks below is where we goy all the pannies. Up at the cabin week of 5/19, fished several waters. Found the chain to be the best its been in years. A lot of walleyes over 20" Big Smile. Also a lot of eaters. Kept enough for a few fish frys. Hope the year continues to be good!
