yank_gooner - just curious about the area you were fishing. I was up last weekend, too, and tried several spots on the river. 95 bridge, K bridge, E. Fork bridge. Didn't catch or see anything. Feel free to PM me if you like. Thanks!

Edit: The dam project has many of the spots that used to produce essentially dried up. Hope it's done soon..

Stayed in the Black River State Forest over the weekend and did as much fishing as possible while up there. Fished the East Fork of the Black River Friday night from 6-8 with not even a bite.

Saturday morning we moved over to the Black River below Lake Arbutus and had some better luck. Fished from 8-12. Beautiful day and beautiful river. Managed dozens of little smallmouth, most under 10" and one or two under 14". Also managed two walleye on consecutive casts, one 14" and the other 17".

Went back to the same area later that evening which only produced more little smallmouth. Same news for Sunday morning.

Didn't go for the fishing, so was not disappointed. Still fun catching little guys all day, but dunno where mom and dad were!?

Heading up near lake Arbutus this weekend. Any reports on bass in the river? Thanks!

Fished on the Black River below the dam in Hatfield, near the Powerhouse further down and below the dam in Black River ... dang slow. Did not get any legal eyes or smallies just a bunch of shorts and a bunch of carp, redhorse and suckers. Tried jigs, spoons, cranks, blade, spinners, crawlers and leeches. Water is really high ... dam gates were open. Still incredibly beautiful ...

I've never done well this late in the year-the bass aren't in their summer areas. I've tried fishing deeper pools late in the year without success.

Wondering how late the Black River holds for bass fishing. I'd like to get up once more this year with the flyrod, but coming up from Madison, so any info is appreciated. Thanks!

Fished the Black River on Saturday the 10th, from BRF to just above lake Arbutus. Hit the water at around 6:30 AM. Solid overcast enticed me to throw top water. Had numerous blowups and several nice fish. Also saw 3 bald eagles and other creatures about. Action was good until the sun broke through around 11:30 AM. Then, everything stopped. Dead calm. No more eagles, no creatures and definitely no fish. Changed tactics several times to no avail. Great day to be out though.

I'll be up this Saturday. Will be wading various stretches from BRF up to Neillsville. Will report next week.

Has anyone fished the river lately? I was planning on floating from irving to melrose this weekend I know the river is low, but any other news would be great, we're gonna be looking for smallies and esox. Thanks

I saw on the news that it is above flood stage (40 ft is flood and it is at 47 ft). I think it will be a few weeks before it is even close to fishable. Then, with that kind of water, I think this season maybe done for the Black River.
