Got back from the Wolf River near Wielands Landing yesterday. From Thursday to Saturday evening we managed 18 nice Crappie. Most of them were caught in the lay downs on either small jigs with a minnow or just a small hook on slip bobbers with a minnow. the crappie we all spread out not yet staging up. Drifted the river for walleye but didn't raise any. Still need the water temp. to come down a bit more.

Fished Saturday afternoon and caught 9 crappie on small jigs and a minnow. Fished @ the big eddie. Also got a few nice smallies to boot. The fish didn't seem schooled up yet. More like scattered all over. Some shallow some deep???

Good Luck!

Fished from 10-2 today between Weiland's and Red Banks. With the major change in weather we didn't have high hopes going out, but wanted to do some fishing anyways. The first hour was very slow with no action at all. We moved quite a bit and finally found some White Bass and managed to put a dozen or so in the livewell. All fish came from the same 200' section of river bank. The sun felt great, but the wind was chilly at times. The river was up quite a bit after the recent rain and the water current was rippin' pretty good. Surface temp around 64 degrees all day. Spinners took all of the fish. Nothing on flies.

Been out numerous times this year done well some days, some days they were few and far between.1/4 oz no bigger color doesn't seem to be too much preference. If you know how to jig that's all you gotta know. Some guys just troll out on big body's of water and it shows when they lose more jigs in one drift than we will all year. Just gotta be a little bit quicker than them snags and know how to work a jig that's all. Seen some guy at shaws landing yesterday too power load his big triton and thought it was a good idea to raise motor and punch it..second later 15 foot rooster tail and three or four soaked people on dock just about to head out..felt bad..but how dumb you really dumb..anyways good luck we'll be out tomorrow again pullin em in

Couple pics of fish this year

I was out yesterday afternoon on a half day trip. We had fair action between 2:30 and 5:30. I again fished 8-13 ft of water with 1/4 oz jigs. We put 6 fish in the boat. 4 spawned out females and two prespawn fish. There are very few males around. In fact I didn't see a small fish caught. I think most of the adult size fish are spawning this week. There are waves of post spawn females coming back. Get on the water this next week as spawning comes to a end and the majority of the fish start to migrate back to the lake.

Fished down river from New London today. Had steady action on prespawn females. Put 12 spawners in the boat,Only had 3 males. Released all the females. Long strait stretches in 8-13 ft seemed to be best. Orange and blue were our best colors. Water temp was at 44-45. Every day , more a more post spawn fish are showing up. The next couple weeks are looking good. Cool temps should prolong the spawn and good fishing should continue. If anyone wants to get out I have April 8 ,13,14,& 15 open. My rates are currently reduced to reflect "lower" fuel costs. Call for rates and to schedule a half of full day trip.

Was fishing from shore at memorial park and only caught 1 little walleye. Me and a friend each hooked into very large sturgeon but broke off before landing them.

Shad

Besides the huge gut on her right now full of eggs, here's a quick primer on ID'ing male from female.

1 Examine the size of your walleye. Females tend to grow faster and larger than males. They are considered fully grown at one year, giving you a more accurate idea of the sex of your fish.

2 Observe behaviors during spawning. Males will discharge a white fluid during early spring, a process known as "milting" that fertilizes laid eggs.

3 Examine the walleye's posterior. The anus on a male is circular while the anus of a female resembles a keyhole, and the female's will become larger once it is time for her to lay eggs.

4 Examine the weight of your walleye. A male will weigh less and look slimmer than a female, with a more streamlined appearance; female walleyes are rounder and plump.

How the heck do so many people know a male from a female unless they are milking? Please share this with me and many other honest fisherman as it is certainly a mystery that so many people say we let go all the spawners when the stringer looks like heavy girls to me?

Vertical jigging Berkley power minnows did the best for us today in 12-24 fow. Released the spawners and caught lots of others!
