Arrived at 8:30am Saturday May 28 with night crawlers and fathead minnows with my dad and cousin. Water was of course high still, O'Leary's lake was a bit flooded. We fished on the rocks against dam #11. No luck for almost an hour. Others were catching big stripers with SHINER minnows caught onsite. So I went back into town to get an umbrella net. I only caught 10 shiners over several attempts. With these 10 shiners, my dad hooked into 3 sauger, a largemouth, rock bass, and 2 striped bass, and a drum. So that's an 8 out of 10 success ratio throughout the day. The action didn't stop as long as a shiner minnow was on the hook. When I couldn't scoop up anymore shiners, the action was non-existent again. Had I had dozens of shiners, we would have had as many hits.
Some people did use white or chartreuse twister tails with limited action, but they also tipped the lure with a shiner.
If you casted and didn't catch a fish and didn't reel the jig in fast, you would inevitably get snagged. That part straight out from the rocks is one giant snag. We did spend a lot of our time re-tying.
