Yeah, I've been looking at this for a long time and hearing more and more reports that people are doing pretty good on perch and even walleyes...

A lot of open water out there. The issue isn't falling through, it's drifting. Not worth it in my opinion.

Menominee River is one of the biggest spawning runs. Occurs in November.

The reason that early ice stinks for Whitefish is because they just spawned a few weeks ago and haven't returned yet. Give it a few weeks and they'll show up.

Does anyone know where the white fish spawn on the bay?

Open water this morning between red river and dyckesville patches of it open further north too. Not safe out there especially with winds and warmer weather this week.

FISHING REPORT
12/9/14 9:58 AM CST
Ice Depth: 7" Conditions: Partly Sunny Air Temp: 26° - 30° F
Went on on Sunday at 6am out of Volks. First 100 feet is flat ice then shove ice for a couple hundred yards. Pain in the ass to walk on. Fished in 11 FOW, only marked once fish in 3 hours. Moved shallower and the ice was shoved so bad underneath the ice you couldn't keep a hole clean.

Come on guys...open water just off there...taking a huge chance! The whitefish just got done spawning, and they are not there yet. Wait another 2 weeks for them to show, and the ice to get good! Hit the bays for perch until it gets better, or you will need the rescue boys for sure. You got lucky that crack didn't expand to where you were on a slow boat to the UP!

FISHING REPORT
12/8/14 1:33 PM CST
Ice Depth: 4" Conditions: Cloudy
Went out Saturday afternoon and all day Sunday. Walked out about 600 yards. Had a solid 4-5 inches of good ice but the rest was very soft and there was at least a foot of slush underneath the ice. Never seen ice like this before but I've also never fished here this early either. There was open water about another 200-300 yards out from where we were (see pic). Ice cracked and shifted while we were out there and found the 3-4 inch crack on our way back that was just starting to freeze over again.

As for the fishing, it was extremely slow. Between Sat & Sun I fished about 15 hours with only 2 whitefish and 2 perch to show for it. Friend of mine was along and got a couple whitefish as well. Using the underwater camera the whitefish were only showing up maybe 1 fish an hour with maybe 25% of them actually biting. Hopefully the numbers start to improve soon!

With the warmer temps coming up this weekend and the poor fishing I'll be fishing some other lake until the conditions improve. Maybe its because I'm not familiar with early ice here but I felt awfully uncomfortable while out there.

Tight lines!

Ice looks good at red river. Stopped out to take a look. Walked out about 100 yards. Didn't drill any holes but ice looks over 6 inches from a crack I seen. I will try it next weekend

Would like to fish for whitefish. When is actually their first bite for the winter? I live about 4 hours away and don't have that much time to burn, therefore, would like to have them on my frying pan in the earliest possible. Thanks in advance.

Live on the bay right by dyckesville there were people out around 6 shacks yesterday. Out around the 14 ft area out of dyckesville. Open water in the middle, I'm assuming ice is safe to walk out on don't go anywhere near the edge but could defiantly puts around in the 5-14 ft range. I won't be walking out until I see more ice in the middle looks like quite a bit of ice though in the last two weeks good luck who ever was out there could maybe give a more accurate ice report.
