Lake Owen, Bayfield County (all postings)

Anybody have any water temps for this lake. Am coming up this weekend. Thanks!!

Trying not to be negative but if you want to catch walleye head to a different lake. Try Namakagon or the Eau Claire lakes for eyes. Poor Lake Owen is in sad condition on the eye population. Over spearing and no new fish being planted has killed the lake as far as any good numbers. As for smallies the season doesn't open till June 15th. Still a few smallies left as the large mouth have started to take over Its sad to see as I have lived on this lake my whole life and it is one of the nicest lakes in the area, sure would be nice to see it full of fish.

Any advice for this body of water for the opener this year in May?

I'll be fishing it for smallies and walleyes and have minimal experience on lake Owen. Any general tips for fishing in spring for either species? Thoughts about the lake?

With it likely being a late ice out this year, I'm not sure where the fish are likely to be. Hoping to shorten the learning curve.

Not closing the campground, the Lake Owen Camp which was for kids (Skating, gymnastics, bmx, etc)

Are they closing the Campground? We have been camping up there since 1978 for annual family vacations. We already have sites booked for 2013. Last year it was more of an RV park than a campground.

Yes the camp was sold to a family that has other property on lake owen. It will not be developed but rather mostly returned to a natural state. Gut-shot you can not drive a vehicle out of otter bay if you go through the narrows you will sink. The only landings to drive off are on the north end.

Anyone know who bought the Lake Owen Camp? I heard it's closing but wasn't sure what the plan was for that land. Hopefully not being developed in to a bunch of homes!

there's a few. There's one on the northwest side, there's one across from that in the state park,(not sure if it's accessible in winter months, and I think you can drive out of Otter Bay resort

which landing can you drive on? I've never fished it in the winter.

fished last night. First time ice fishing Owen and wasn't too bad. No Walleyes, but did manage a few nice perch and 3 northerns for the pickle jar.

How is the ice? Can we drive out on this lake yet?

Went up to Owen to close down the cabin--always a sad time of year. Good news is that the walleye fishing was the best I've seen in quite awhile. Fish were deep on the rocks and caught on sucker minnows or a jig and a minnow. Caught some nice smallies too!

Had a great night last night. We just slaughtered the bass. Over 25 caught (Mostly small mouths). Over a dozen were 14"+. Caught a few northerns, nice bluegills, and rock bass. Today was not as good. 1 nice 24" northern, 1 nice 18" Largemouth, and a hand full of bluegills, rock bass and small mouths smaller than 10". The only thing they'd bite on were night crawlers both days.
