Anyone have a report on the algea bloom? Is it pretty bad right now? Wondering if we come over and fish next weekend if the kids could get in the water later in the day and flop around or do the sandbar?

Fished last weekend on Chetek, trying to find 'wood' cribs or stumps. Before I did find wood I found some suspended fish right away, but only got a few hit and miss, Probably smaller fish.
Found more suspended fish while scouting for wood, crappies and gills, some of them pretty good seize. Had to stay in 11 ft of water, if we got deeper or shallower the finder would clear up. Fish were 5 to 9 ft down. Casting jigs on a fix bobber, minimites, tube jigs and hair jigs worked equally. Had waxies but made no difference, I guess the fish were hungry for anything. Only kept a handfull of fish. LOTS of boat traffic, we were bouncing pretty good.
p.s. Tryed a small jiggin rap for kicks, and only b-gills were hitting hit while others were getting crappies with jigs under a bobber, I thought it was odd for b-gills to hit it.
Sorry about the confusion. By the wood I meant both over the stumps and over the man-made cribs. You can find the general locations of most of the cribs from the free maps available at the bait stores. You also need a good depth finder to pinpoint them.

Just returned from 5 days of fishing in the chain. 8/8 thru 812. The fishing was red hot for all 5 days. A good mixture of gills and crappie with some huge fish. Unlike June where the active fish were off the bottom this time all the fish came off the wood. we used the usual 1/64oz jigs tipped with waxies or gulp minnows fished above the wood to take a two man limit in 3 days. It was some of the fastest action that we ever had in August. Hopefully the fishing stays hot for my September trip.

Was on the Chain last week. I have been coming up for over 30 years and the Panfishing was as tough as I have ever seen it. The last day the weather turned around and crappie were biting in 6-8' of water. Most were 8.5"-9""with the biggest at 11 3/4". We did catch a nice mess of Crappie one night at sundown in the shallows. Caught few bluegill but the ones we did catch were nice ones. Weather was not ideal with northwest winds 15 mph most of the week and low temps were in the 50's at night. We caught a good number of bass including 2 smallmouth which was nice to see but most were 12" with a few around 16". Caught close to 30 Northern through out the week with the biggest at 32.5". Most were in the 20-24" range.
