MOON PHASE (78%)
Waxing Gibbous

ICE DEPTH
15 inches

Fished Friday mid-day and Saturday until about 11:30 in 22 FOW in the high banks area.

Crappie were biting both days, as per usual they come and go. Managed 20 nice cleaners between the trips out, not bad, only fished a total of about 5 hours. Threw at least as many back, many smalls and a few big breeders. A few perch and some walleye in the mix as well, but nothing to keep.

Minnows deadsticked, or spikes jigged were the best baits. Glow red and glow pink were the best colors. 3 feet off the bottom and down. Would jig them up with the spikes and they would hit the suspended minnows which were at 3 and 5 foot off the bottom. Best fishing was from 10-1:30 (normal for that spot). Overall the bite was very light, missed a bunch at first, then switched to tiny treble hooks with the minnows and was more successful.

Travel on the ice was very good. I'm certain there remain some trouble spots, but the vast majority of the lake is safe for travel in a car or truck, just stick to the roads that are out there.

Fished for 2 hrs Sunday, got 4 nice crappie (11-12") and missed several others at the hole or on the way up. Biting very light. Minnows or spikes and plastic all worked about the same, but the bite was very light.

23 FOW in the high banks area. Expect to be back out this weekend, will post a report the same day.

For Crappie Guy- There are several places to stay on the lake. Paradise Shores is under new ownership, and from what I hear is nice. I think Pine Drive has winter rentals as well and their restaurant is pretty good.

There are many good places to eat in the area. A long time favorite is Big Swede's, but Johnson's Crossing gets great reviews and Ted's Timber Lodge is a great setting. The Holcombe cafe is a great place for breakfast or lunch. Huge servings and fantastic bakery and omelets.

Braved the rain today...but stayed mostly dry..or a little damp under our pop ups and fish traps.  Descent fishing today on Lake Holcomb east of Lions Park campground. The crappies were biting, managed to take home over a dozen 11-12" and a couple 13" crappies jigging with minnows and tip downs with plain hook and minnow. Also managed to catch a couple small walleyes and a nice 17 1/2 inch walleye jigging with a minnow. All walleyes released. Also caught a small northern.... maybe 20". Most action were on the tip downs with crappie minnows. But some were biting on green and black jigs tipped with a waxie. Also caught some with pink and white jigs and a waxie.  So the pattern of jigs didn't matter much as we were all using a variety and still caught fish. The group of guys about 20 yards from us were doing even better than us...seemed like they were running to their tip downs every couple minutes pulling out crappie after crappie....they were very discrete and tried carefully not to show that they were catching anything, but it was obvious as we could easily see them running to their tip downs and pulling out fish that appeared similar in size to ours and a few that looked much larger....but they were definitely pulling more out of their their holes than we were.  We were fishing about 20ft of water and the group that was doing better than us were in 22ft (we found that out because we tried their spot after they left-only caught two more crappies, but had three tip downs that we missed before we had to go. Ice is at least 12", but it was very sloppy, wet, slushy on the lake.  Three to 4"of wate and slush on the ice. Toilet bowl holes, with water from the top of the ice draining into them. Didn't cause any trouble though. Just swirling in the holes. Cars and trucks driving on the ice, but I'd still use caution as there is plenty of current under the ice. As your jig/lure/line would move slightly with the current. Good luck!

Parents told me that lake is frozen over. In their small bay there was about 3 inches as of Saturday. I'm sure there is more now. This was out of any current so those areas may have less ice.

Regarding a contour map of the river; I'm not aware of one that goes much past the Hwy D/E bridge, but my experiences fishing north and west of there are that the river becomes pretty predictable regarding depth and holes are where one would expect them to be.

I haven't fished as much the last couple weeks as I normally do, and haven't had very good luck when I did. I have managed a few crappie and a few smaller walleye, but only a few. No specific pattern has been best, but the fish I did get were on live bait jigging or on small crank baits cast along breaks in low light. A 6-10 foot weed edge has been the best for me. A few fish in the timber on the river channels, but not as many as usual.

Hopefully stable weather will promote some good fishing soon. The lake is clearer than normal for this time of year, algae bloom is just starting.

I fished on Thursday night July 7th after work. Started out casting the weeds and shore lines for crappie and had no luck. I caught a northern and small, Small Mouth bass. I changed tactics and started flipping tube jigs in the weeds and stumps along the shore line. I ended up catching four more Smallmouth all about 12 inches long.

Got  out a few times this weekend. Saturday afternoon went to a deeper spot 18-20fow in the old Jump River Channel. First minute there with a blue jig got a nice healthy 17inch walleye. We got a crappie and a smaller 13 inch walleye in that same spot. All fish were returned.

Sunday evening went up the jump a little and got 3 smaller walleye trolling in about 7 fow. Lake was very busy with the holiday.

MOON PHASE
Last Quarter

Fishing has been a little slow for me the last couple of weeks. The ever changing weather has kept fish moving and not that active (for me).

Hoping to fish a bunch over the next couple weekends. We usually do pretty well on walleye over the 4th week. I'll be fishing bends and stumps on the river channel with jig and leeches or doing some trolling.

If we have some quiet evenings I'll probably start casting for crappie. This is when I usually start doing well. Shad raps and small spinner baits are my favorites

Good luck to everyone.

Fished a little Friday evening and Saturday morning. Managed a few nice walleye under the slot and some crappie. Found fish in the stumps in about 15 FOW, best bait was a jig and minnow fished almost vertically. Bluegill are just headed into the shallows.
