MOON PHASE
New Moon

Anybody who thinks this lake is better off then the 80’s-mid 90’s is clueless.  The amount and size of the walleyes in nothing like it used to be.  In 1993 I caught 15 walleyes over 28 inches.  This lake is lucky to see that amount of big fish caught by all its anglers a year now.  It was easy to go out and catch 10-15 legal walleyes a day.  Still good but no where close to that today.

The crappie population is a shell of what it was back then.  There were hundreds of guys icefishing daily at several ice spots catching great bags daily.  The perch population was so much greater then it’s not even comparable.  Heck even the bluegill population was as good as it is now!  So mr tommy I’d say you didn’t fish the lake then or have a very poor memory of how much better the fishing was.  The water drawdown is bad for the pike spawning because the areas they spawn are routinely out of water with the low over winter water level.

There really is no debating these facts ask any old timer about the lake.  Every one bit tommy will have a different story.  I also am sick at the level of the lake this winter.  The biomass of a watershed is controlled by its food and moving river systems can’t be compared to a traditional lake or pond.  The rock system has more food in aquatics and minnows then the fish can eat.  This is confirmed by the DNR personnel themselves.  Your analogy is a failed attempt to justify poor management.

What a shame.  I saw the gills floating up in the holes during the warm spell.  Thought maybe some guys were just rough handling them.  This is sad to hear.

Yep shotsee it’s legal as long as you catch the gill from that water.  Try fishing the boat slips at Charlie bluff.  Usually lots of small panfish in there!

Just for understand. I was going to catch the bluegill in Kosh and use them for bait in kosh OR the mouth of the rock river. I do believe that is legal to do that.

Tommy

I am a Vietnam Vet 70-71, and would love to go out and learn. I moved on Lake Koshkonong a couple of blocks from norms, and so far am just a good catfish fisherman. My wife put me on notice that I HAVE to catch a walleye this year for her :). I would love one good day to learn how it's done

If that offer is still open in the summer, I am IN

I got the biggest goose egg yet Sunday am. Got out at a nice 4 degrees and had ice on the bottom of my auger and it tried to walk me half way to Busseyville. I was trying to blow on the ice and it made more ice. Time to go home. Biomass is what I`ve heard for years from the DNR. A body of water can only hold so many fish. Make the body of water smaller (draw down) and it`s biomass decreases. From fishing this system from the mid 70`s till now I would say it is in the best shape as I have ever seen it. I don`t know if the carp fishermen or herpes got rid of the  a lot of the carp, but since there numbers are way down, all wanted species of fish are on the rise. Anybody remember a couple of summers ago when a lot of big game fish came up dead? Biomass?  I hope they use this same logic to leave the walleye limits alone. I posted a picture last fall of a small walleye-6 inches maybe. The last couple of falls I have caught a ton of this. Great spawns! Not many lakes you can get gills bigger than the walleyes, Ha. Anyway I really enjoyed taking a Vet fishing last summer. The lake was pretty kind to our guys, except Bill And Jerry, who I would be honored to take out again. Any other Vet that would like to go out this summer, don`t be scared to get a hold of me to take you out. I got all the gear and could get a pontoon if needed. T-2-T

Yeah we tried our gill spot Saturday and saw the same thing.  Probably 150-200 panfish dead Crappies, gills, yellows, floating under or froze into the ice.  I got not one good word to say for the DNR management of the lake.  Total lack of reguard for the resource.  Drive down to newville once and look at the rip rap leve built to work on the interstate bridge.  Obviously the water level is bottomed to oblige the construction.  Wonder how much $$$$ they gave the DNR????

Any word of a winter kill? Heard there were hundreds of dead white bass, crappies and bluegills in near haights or Stoney Point. I guess hundreds of fish dead below the ice. Very sad to say the least.

Wouldn't be surprised with this draw we had in the fall.

Pretty sure Larry was saying this because targeting Gils on Kosh is tough at best. Also, the initial poster did not state where He was going to use them as bait. Larry is a good guy and knows the regs...he is also one of the fee people on this site that gives good reports and/or advice...

Get off your horse and go fish....
