FISHING REPORT
5/21/13 9:20 PM CST
when the cats are on, anything seems to work. evidenced by the nights (630/7pm - 830/930pm) when I have been catching cats (along with bullheads) on mini-mites while fishing for crappies and gills (pink heads/white body and fl. green heads/black bodies). even caught a few on wooly buggers while fly fishing for crappies, gills and bass. one constant was winds were light, wave action minimal and all fish caught tight, I mean tight, to shore; almost like ice fishin' jiggin' standing close to hole (water) with rod in hand (on shore); ankle to calf deep water. now when there is a chop, then live bait (crawlers) or gulp! crawlers seem better with an actual weight to hold bait still. I've yet caught a fish, with live or artificial, more than 5 feet off shore [S end of BD>. pretty fun catching 22-24" cats on 4# ultralight. all released. this is not b.s. A beautiful expensive name-brand boat laughed at me the other night, wondering why I was using a "cane-pole with a reel" - after I pulled in and released several crappies, gills and bass on the fly rod they yelled "learn how to fish for real" and then sped off, having caught zero fish while trolling 6 lines back and forth past me for over an hour. sometimes basic is everything.

the best baits i have had success with on this water are chicken livers and "commercial baits", crawlers have netted more bullheads than cats for me, and idk maybe its just my dumb luck but i think tho this water IS good to net a few cats, it's just too hit or miss, I've had six in an hr one day and fishing hrs with zero to show the next, if i can offer some advice (strictly from my own personal experience mind you ) bring a few different baits and the legal max of tackle baited with your different baits, cats are just like any other fish contrary to popular belief, what works one day may not the next, what's working for the guy 20' from you may not get you as much luck, i have fun either way and thats what its really about in the end...on a final note if you're having problems with your chicken liver staying on the hook just get some cheap elastic string (the stuff that makes your tightey whiteys stay up lol )from any hobby store or even Walmart, go around your bait a few times and snap it off tight from the spool, works like a charm, happy fishing and good luck to you all and me too lol

Went out tonight for the major. Fished for about one hour and hauled in 15 cats and two crappie. Caught the cats on two baits. 1st one was night crawler's, Second one funny enough was pickled hot sausages from rechecks. We bought em before we came out intending to eat them but ran out of crawlers so I popped one in the hook and bam bam. Caught the majority with the sausages.

was for 6 hours today and have 3 cats to show for it. I was using crawlers and minnows fished out of a boat around the islands by edgewater and the rocks soutwest of edge water. Everyone is always complaing about the cats being everywere but so far I have 6 to show for it on the year. If people want these cats caught specific locations were a guy could go and catch a bunch would be great.I get work 6 days a week and only get to fish sunday so my time on the water would rather be spent catching cats, than wasting time.

Fish for cats in the rocky areas (during the day) adjacent to shallower flats or bays that make for potentially good night feeding haunts. Rocky areas in about 3.5 feet of water seem to be doing the best. Set baits at about 2.5 feet. Leave the commercial stink baits at home; they work better in rivers - though, still, not as good as natural baits in my opinion. Be aware though of VHS rules when going the natural bait route.

sure would like to know where this hot catfish bite is..we sat out for 6 hrs between edgewater and the park off of airport..threw punch bait, crawlers, and even cut bait, have one cat to show for, seen zero cats caught by others and asked two guys that were at edge water for two hrs before we got there and they said not a bite as they were packing up to leave, but i did see crappies being sporadically caught at both locations, and i mean very sporadic...the one cat was taken on the cut bait btw

Got the wife out for the first time fishing this year. I wanted some action for her so we fished for cats. We caught 15 in 1.75 hours of fishing using only three lines between us. The cats are just nuts in this lake. Minnows and night crawlers - and they both worked equally well.

Went crappie fishing yesterday on BDL and caught about 20 cats. Oh ya - caught one crappie. He's back in the big pond swimming; but, 8 of the 20 cats aren't! Wink

Just an idea but if you guys are fishing for crappies and using live bait in a heavily populated catfish area your best bet is to try something artificial. Majority of the crappies we caught were on their beds and holding extremely tight to cover. We were about ten yards away from a fallen down tree and we were getting a few crappies around the outside of the tree. I snagged my 1/16 oz jig on a branch so we trolled up in there and got a better look. There were over 100 crappies all sitting on their beds underneath one tree. Needless to say we never moved the boat back out. We limited out in 30 min. Going back in the morning to the same spot. Just a FYI we could hardly see the ones tucked in without our polarized glasses. They also helped with locating branches that we have never seen without our polarized glasses. Good luck everyone.

Hey, I have been looking through some of the previous threads on this lake and are wondering what it's conditions are like in the summer time. My parents actually just put an offer in for a house on the lake, and I have never fished it, but here that it isn't too deep. Does this lake get weed choked in the summer? Any large insect hatches or kill-off's in the summer? Just curious, as it is a lake house on a lake with fish in it, so it is better off than not!!! Thanks for the help.
