Little Sturgeon Bay, Door County
The temps may not melt the ice, but the wind and any rain will have a bigger say in that. Willing to bet that in 3 weeks time, it will be a no go. I hope I'm wrong, but will not be the least bit surprised. A year ago to the day was one of the last days out there for most guides.
Ice on Little Sturgeon itself is still decent if you can find a good entry point. Cars and Trucks still driving out.On the east side all trucks stopped short of the tip of Riley's Point. Shorelines however are not good. Lots of open holes and thin spots. We made the decision to walk out from Sunset but didn't need to. Still 18-20 of ice in ok condition.
Claflin Point where the Suburban went through is a well known bad area. You should never drive closer than 150 yards from there at ANYTIME. Currents from the bay come around the corner, hit that reef, and swirl deteriorating the ice from underneath. It claims at least 1 truck or ATV every year.
Drivers should start avoiding squaw island as well. The reef off the point is long and shallow, and is the second place to open up after Claflin Point.
