I received a message from the Dept. of Transportation regarding an informational meeting regarding the soon-to-be-coming new bridge and fishing piers in Winneconne and wanted to try and get the message out to folks that fish from the bridge and who have a interest in the project. The info that I got from DOT was:

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation Northeast Region is encouraging the public to attend a meeting to discuss transportation improvements in the village of Winneconne. It will be held on Wednesday, November 5, 2014 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. (short presentation at 5:15 p.m.) at the Winneconne Elementary School, 233 South Third Avenue. Topics of discussion will include the replacement of the Winneconne Bridge, construction of fishing piers (fishing from the new WIS 116 bridge will not be possible) and the reconstruction of WIS 116 in the village of Winneconne.

Additionally, with the tentative construction schedule, fishing shouldn’t be affected at least until start of construction in Summer 2017. Fishing would still be allowed from north side of existing bridge during 2017 and most of 2018 but south side fishing would be limited due to new bridge construction on that side. Likely that no fishing would be allowed for Spring/Summer of 2019 since existing bridge will be demolished and the new fishing piers will be in the process of being constructed.

If you are at all interested in the proposed new bridge and fishing piers in Winneconne and would like to get correct information please try and make the above meeting, and please share this info with anyone else who may have an interest.

Have a great remainder of the fall fishing season and be safe!

For you guy's coming up this week, the schools of white bass are still all over the lakes. They have actually been moving to the shallow waters in the river, in town, the last two days, because of all the boat traffic due to the warm weather. But they are still there, in the river, and can be found with a little effort.

Fished winneconne Monday and Tuesday . There are lots of white bass and good sized ones too. They are tight to the bridge. We trolled purple and red and white flies . Some times we were so close to the bridge I could touch the concrete supports with my rod. Center areA of bridge was producing best. Our best trolling spreeds were .8 to .9 miles per hour. Stayed at wolf river house resort couldn't have been any closer to the action. Great place great people.

Smay, Zane, you should be here. Water never hit 80 degrees. Makes for good fishing everywhere in the system. The water level has now just dropped about a foot, after being high all year. Cats have been easy around the bridge. For all you guy's coming up in two weeks, should be great.

Hey Headpopper:

Last weekend the hot color for us was a fly that had red and white hair on it and one that had pink and white. But if one color combo is not working change to different colors, somedays color doesnt matter at all and some days it is critical.

We rig them up like a wolf river rig with a dropper line to the weight that is no more than one foot long. The line that we tie to the fly is 5 - 6 feet. Shorter than that doesnt seem to work as well. Also we usually tie two to three flies on the same line. We have had many occasions when we get two fish at the same time. Now that is a lot of fun.

Good luck.

Fished Friday Saturday, Sunday and monday out of Winnneconne. Stayed at Wolf River house resort. If you want white bass they are still hitting there. pretty much a early moring, and evening bite. We pulled flies, used two fly set ups with a red and white and a pink and white fly.

Most people were fishing in the north side of the bridge, we worked the south side of the bridge, start at the Radtke Barge, stay in 6 -10 ft of water, and go as far south as the tall Pink boat house. Most fish were caught pulling flies working from South to North, didnt pick up too many going the other direction. Fished with my wife, ended up taking 200 + home. Had a lot of fun with a huge Carp (33"), a 5 lb sheep head, and an enormous Sturgeon that broke the net when we tried to get him in for a photo opportunity. Be prepared for a lot of action, for some reason there are tons of Sturgeon in that area right now, had several on the line by accident.

If you have any questions on fishing go over to the Wolf River house resort, they have lots of up to date knowlege of whats happening and where.

Fished from 6-10 Friday night. O eyes. I was the only boat anchored on west side of river. A "professional" guide came through so close to me that he snagged and broke two of my lines and acted like he couldn't hear me swearing at him. WTF? I guess guides own the waters and we should all reel up when they come around!!
