FISHING REPORT

Conditions: Sunny Air Temp: 86° - 90° F Water Temp: 76° - 80º F
Fished big hills Friday 8/8/14 from 530 pm till dark. In total we caught about 25 or so bass and a pike. All bass were between 6 inches and 12.5, nothing of any size. The pike was about a 18 inch snake. We caught most of the fish on crankbaits, rattle traps, a few on a finesse worms. We hit most of the lake, best action was around 10-14 feet in clumps of weeds. It seems this lake is loaded with tons of small bass, in the 6-10 inch range. Most casts would result in several small bass following lures in. Funny how many small bass were caught on a 4 inch crankbaits. Didn't realize there was no size limit on bass here, but good idea to thin them out. Saw a few nice perch around 10-12 inches as well as they followed lures in but never hit. Talked to others fishing and they seemed to have slower action then us. Might not bass fish here again till the lakes ecosystem changes a bit.

Went out this morning, from 6-11 or so and tried for panfish and tip up action, no luck on the tip ups and only a few small dink perch. Tried fishing from 8-20 FOW, with weeds and no weeds, lots of lookers but very few would commit. Threw the box at them and they ran away. O well.

Fished here a few weeks ago and pulled a couple nice northern and bass out. Plan on fishing NW drop off tomorrow morning looking for panfish or walleye. Any tips would be appreciated. I'll update report Sunday.

Great stuff Snuffy. Thanks for pointing out some areas to focus on. We'll have a 4-wheeler and will likely make some trips around the lake..

Here's a picture of one of those bluegills I told you about. The areas I did well in are in the other photo.

Good Luck.

Fellow Fishermen-

Sorry for no report, but was hoping someone could provide some guidance. My family is renting a cabin on the Northeast side of the lake where we will be ice fishing for an entire weekend.

We're open to catching whatever bites, and plan to use a combination of tip ups and tip downs (and some traditional jigging).

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Good luck & tight lines

To anyone that icefishes this lake:

Do you think the east end or west end are better for gills and norts?

Welcome your thoughts.

As far as I know…. The only landing for Hills Lake is the county maintained landing south of the lake. It has the small playground there. In the summer you can get into two of the deeper holes by boat. But, without an ATV or snowmobile it’s quite a trek from the landing in winter.

is the landing in the left bay the only access to the lake?

My son and I hit Big Hills today and caught several undersized Large mouth bass and some bluegill and a 34lb carp that hit a crank bait , it almost spooled me so I had to turn boat around and chased it.
