Went on Saturday (7/20/13), slow fishing for the time I was out (10am-3pm). Used Drop-shot with crawler and caught around 6 smallies, all 7-10 inches. Saw hundreds of yearling smallies and some rock bass and gills. The man working at the boat landing said that the lake had been slow for a week or two.

I hope the bite picks up soon! Feel free to let me know if it does!

Again, I am trying to improve my bass fishing and was wondering if anyone could give me any more advice about fishing Butternut. I am coming back next weekend, so I am just looking for a little advice. Thank you!

On my last trip I caught a few on a dropshot with nightcrawler in 20 FOW.

WOW..........Sad! I'm sure this was not Darin's idea of a fishing web page, when he first had the idea of starting one.

Well Gunner moron, the words you quoted, "on this thread" should be enough said....in case your pea brain hadn't noticed this is a different thread but morons from the Shawano Lake moron saturated thread (which I no longer even insult my intelligence by viewing) still follow. Go get some therapy. Wingnut.

WATER TEMP
66° - 70° F
Was out on the nut last week Monday. Mayfly hatch in prior two or so days didn't help anything...mayfly hulls all over surface...in a few hours only one dink smallie and a 17" smallie near some cribs in about 12 or 14 fow. Wish I would have stayed till dark....topwater bite can be a blast. (Went to Kentuck for a few hours Tuesday and hammered a dozen or so 16 to 17 1/2" largemouth with a few smallies up to 17 1/2" thrown in. Algae bloom on Kentuck, warmer water, notice of pesticides sprayed and smelly dead panfish on shore by campground landing...)

I fished this lake a few weeks ago. It was my first time on the water and I was in 16-20 FOW. I managed 4 smallmouth fishing a drop-shot rig with nightcrawler. I am trying to improve my fishing and was wondering if someone with more experience fishing for smallmouth or fishing this body of water could give me any advice?

To answer your question about butternut being open. No it is not. It has approximately 17 inches of ice on it yet but is getting very soft. I live in the area and fish it very regularly. It should be open late this week. My guess is Thursday you can get out and fish anywhere you want out there in a boat!

Sad to hear that Butternut Lake Lodge is closing. I have heard stories of the Cody days and it sounded like a blast back then.

I have stopped there for a pizza and a few beers many times and it hit the spot on a hot day. My family owned a business on water and its tough sledding these days up north. It would be cool if someone could buy that property and turn it into a nice restaurant but it will probably turn into houses like everywhere else. Sweating

There are a ton of humps on B-nut. You just have to do some trial and error on which ones hold fish. I have caught walleyes on rock humps, cribs, and what little weeds are left in the lake. You just have to put some time in and find the spot that works for you. I have heard that the eyes and some perch are doing better the past few years but I have not had a chance to get out and try. I fished it summer and fall and did well on smallies but that is normal for the NUT.

Butternut Lake Lodge (formerly Cody's and then owned by the Porter's) closed down this winter. I have stayed there for years and received notice that they will no longer be open for business. Good numbers lake. Trophy potential has gone down as the fishing pressure has gone up.
