FISHING REPORT
7/30/15 12:42 PM CST
Search concluded this morning when the body of the victim was recovered.

It's unfortunate that it takes this type of situation for people to wake up to the risks involved being on the water and yet some still don't get it. This morning I went out for about an hour and there was a water skier being pulled by a jet ski. No life jackets being worn by either and no spotter on the jet ski.

There's a missing boater on the lake. Search and rescue teams pulled out around 9:30 tonight and will be back at it tomorrow. Just a heads up for anyone who hasn't heard this news that there will be a recovery effort going on until the individual is found. The search is being conducted on the west end of the lake.

@jish Yes, there are Longnose Gar in Shawano lake. I was surprised when I accidentally caught 2 of them yesterday. I was just a bit northwest of bluegill hill and had a minnow below a slip bobber about 10 feet down. The first one I caught was about 20 inches long (see picture). The second one was just shy of 28 inches.

I'm going to fish this lake in a couple weeks and I was just wondering where to find the best spot to get some walleyes. Any response back would be great, thanks

Wannabefisher...

There are numerous places, Huckleberry Harbor, the dam, Monkey Island. Dam is straight west of ball parks about 8 blocks of so..

Huckleberry and Monkey Island (Heritage Park) are both north of the park about 8 blocks by the sheriff's office. Harbor is east of Hwy 55, park is west. Ask someone working they will direct you.

not too familiar with the area but I will be up in Shawano this weekend for a baseball tournament and will have several hours to kill, are there any spots on the lake to fish from shore where it would keep a 8 and 10yr old occupied for a bit?

To answer your question there are gar in this lake. I had 2 swim underneath my kayak last spring. But earlier this year I caught a smaller northern reeling in my bobber with worm so yes it could be a northern or gar.

Was up in Shawano visiting family and brought the new (to me) boat up to get out fishing with my boys and cousin. Don't know the lake at all, and still learning this art of fishing, so figured we'd see where the other fishermen are and follow their lead. There were tons of boats all around the island, so that's where we focused. Started on the northwest side in 8-12 fow and marked fish but didn't have any luck. Pushed over to the east side and caught a few small pannies in 6ish fow. Then went over to the north side of the island in 10-12 fow and started hitting fish nearly every cast. Nothing of any real size though. A couple big blue gill that we ended up throwing back cause not nearly enough for a fish fry. Then my 7 year old is reeling in a catch, and I get a glimpse of what looks like a skinny but long 26-28" northern. I go grab the net and get there just in time to see him pull the fish right next to the boat, and then see it dive down and snap his 4lb test line. Sad My older son said he thinks the fish was a gar, and I actually didn't see the mouth. I was thinking that it looked to skinny for a northern of that length. Anyone know if there are gar on this lake? Seemed a little odd that a northern that long would grab a crawler piece sitting out on a bobber, but I thought maybe he got a small pan fish first and then the northern jumped on it. Anyway, disappointing to not boat the nicest fish of the weekend, but he was ecstatic that he "caught" the northern that he had talked about catching the entire ride up to Shawano. Unfortunately, I was skunked on the bass & northern that I was casting for, but always fun when the kiddies are catching fish.

Went out Sunday with the wifey and all 5 kids (yep FIVE), but only got a couple small ones. Pretty rough day on the water, but the kids had a blast being out on the boat anyway. Until next time Shawano.

Heading up to Shawano from Kenosha to go fishing tomorrow morning with my cousin (who lives up there) and my 2 boys. This will only be my 2nd time out on Shawano Lake, and we didn't have much luck the first time around. Planning to target some pan fish for the boys, and bass/northern for my cousin and I. If anyone would be willing to share some info on what gear/bait has been catching them and any general info on where to fish, it would be greatly appreciated.

I'll be sure to post a report on how it goes.

Just a note "Vodkadrummer"--I found your 27 inch walleye floating dead today about 1/2 mile from Bluegill hill. yes IT WAS a nice fish. Water temps in the 70's people have to take EXTREME care when handling and releasing these warhorses. These things happen, it is just unfortunate to see such a wonderful walleye dead for future seagull food. Obviously this could be a different fish, but it looked like it had been dead since the 21st. Way to coincidental. Hot water is tough on walleye stress

Went after Perch and Bluegill today. Wandered out to the middle of the lake as the girlfriend had to use the livewell....ended up jigging 30ft for a while drifting and came up with the biggest Walleye I've ever caught in my life! This 27 incher is still swimming! Big Smile ...oh yeah, and we caught about 10-12 panfish (a few Perch, but mostly Bluegill) after that in about 10 feet just on the edge of some submerged vegetation. Awesome Father's Day!!
