FISHING REPORT
11/23/14 12:06 PM CST
gave it a try on saturday morning and had the lake to myself. between deer hunting and the fishing on this lake going down the tubes the last few years i know why i had it to myself. nothing but a few tiny gills and perch. went over to crooked and manage a meal of gills. ice was about 3"...that was obviously before all the rain and warm temps we're getting right now.

Pike size limits have only created stunted pike in southern Wisconsin.Another dnr law that backfired. Also does damage to panfish populations. Sad

Pike must be 26 inches on Mauthe and the bag limit is two. 90 percent of them are 19 - 24. I usually get 1 or 2 30 plus per winter. And another couple off the pier in summer.

i was out there 5 times last year, and never saw a northern come through a hole bigger than 19", and there weren't many of those. caught plenty of 5" bluegill...the ones that are in there are probably well fed. it's a tiny lake...doesn't need anyone keeping a northern of legal size if you're even lucky enough to get one. if you want to chase flags all day go to kettle moraine or long lake. i don't tip-up fish, but when i'm out on those lakes, i see a lot more flags popping and nicer fish coming through the holes.

Any ice reports in the next six weeks would be greatly appreciated. As soon as we got 4-6 in. I'll be there! 19-35 in. Pike all day!

FISHING REPORT
11/7/14 5:40 PM CST
Conditions: Cloudy Air Temp: 41° - 45° F
Out with my son last Sunday afternoon and hooked this nice large mouth off the end of the fishing pier on the East side of the lake.

Quite surprisingly, this is the 2nd 20"+ fish we've landed in four trips to Mauthe this summer and fall. 90 minutes in to the visit. I worked a variety of shallow, mid and deeper diving crank baits. The strike was just off the Northern most corner of the pier, at the edge of the shelf that the lilly pads grow at in the summer months. Actually thought I had a weed tangle on the bass' first hit.

Nice day for fishing. We were alone out there for the majority of the time.

In July, my son (picture also attached) landed a 24" Northern in the same spot.

Fished yesterday for a couple hours. All we got were a handful of Gills. We wanted to go by the dam but the river was flooded out real bad. Oh well we will get them next time.

Fished here on 2-22-14. Did not catch a thing. Only marked a couple fish but they wouldn't bite. Fished off of the beach. Saw a couple guys on the other side of the lake. Don't know if they were catching anything or not.

had a few hours this morning, so i decided to give mauthe a shot since it's in my backyard. awful morning of fishing. more lookers than biters, but when a decent sized school would come in you could always talk a few in to biting. the only problem was that they were all 3-5 inch perch and gills. back to winnebago for me.

FISHING REPORT

Ice Depth: 20"
Was out today with my buddy Danny pretty slow day. I caught 1 23 inch Northern and a 14inch Largemouth Bass. And my buddy got 1 small Gill and 1 small Perch. This was our first time on this lake so we didn't really know where to start. We really look forward to learning this lake we had a ton of lookers on our vexilars with not many takers. We fished in depths from 10 fow to about 21 fow. I guess will get them next time.

Went to Mauthe with my grandpa this afternoon before heading back to school. Tried jigging today and was able to catch a few small fish. Fishing in 20 feet of water I caught a small bluegill (maybe 5-7inches) and about 10 or so small perch (5 inches). Saw a group of guys pull out a small northern on a tip-up. I caught all of my fish on a 1/16 slender spoon tipped with one or two spikes. Be careful on the drive in. The road into the park was solid ice when we got there and was still mostly covered when we left. It was melting but not quickly enough to get rid of it all before it gets cold again.

I'm going out sunday. I go to Mauthe every year a few times with my kids... I'm expecting the same 10-30 flags I do every year..Ill let you know how I do...but one thing ive noticed is many anglers fish the shores just like in summer.. We usually only get one or two a year over 30 inches but we chase flags all day dead center 300 yds straight out from pier. Nothin big but its fun!...Beware of the side towards the campground.. I went through last year...still don't know why and DNR never got back to me..GL all!

That's to bad. One of my favorite lakes to fish northern as a kid. To many people keeping the northern as soon as they hit 26".
