MOON PHASE (25%)
Waning Crescent

Smelt Report, May 10, 2018
The ice is mostly out now!!! Finally! However, there are still some chunks hanging around the shoreline here and there. The Hot Pond is open and Bayview beach is mostly open. There was a report that a ½ bucket was brought in last night. Looks like a very slow start. We will keep you posted.

If you are a drop-net smelter, please note that the dock at Bayview Park is closed off due to storm damage and reconstruction.

Sorry to say but we still have ice all along the shoreline in Ashland. The Hot Pond is open but there has been no Smelt Action there.

The ice is starting to “Chunk-Up” in areas but we are still semi-iced in. There are not a lot of areas to put a net in at this time on the Ashland shoreline so we haven’t had reports of anyone getting smelt here yet! If you are a drop-net smelter, please note that the dock at Bayview Park is all closed off due to storm damage and reconstruction. Keep checking with us and as soon as we hear of Smelt coming in here we will let you know!!!!

Ashland WI Smelt Report, May 3rd, 2018
The ice on the Ashland side of the Bay is now starting to “Chunk-Up” in areas but we are still semi-iced in. There are not a lot of areas to put a net in at this time on the Ashland shoreline so we haven’t had reports of anyone getting smelt here yet! Keep checking with us and as soon as we hear of Smelt coming in here we will let you know!!!!

The Rivers are open for fishing and the fishing opener is May 5th!!!!

Scott Bretting from River Rock reports: The Inlands will open up on May 5th to Walleye, Northern Pike, and Bass. Most Landings are still iced-in. We need warm weather, wind and a little rain to change that. Note; Any iced-in areas are NOT recommended for ice fishing at all. Be safe!!!!!!

The New License’s are now available for the year.

The smelt start normally running about 2 weeks after ice out. Currently, the entire Ashland side is locked in with ice. If you wanted, you could try the head of the Bay to about Maslowski Beach, that is all open water. But the rest is still ice. It is moving around good, so hopefully within a week or so, it will be gone.

You're right. Sure looks a lot different from the live cam. You could visibly see the ice 2 days prior but on that picture it look like it disappeared or severely broke up. First pic is yesterday May 1st. 2nd is from April 29th. https://earthdata.nasa.gov/worldview

Taking that all into consideration I was looking for a little advice from locals or anyone else with a general prediction of when the smelt run will occur.

My family has been making an annual trip up to Ashland the last several years and with the late ice-out this year it is making it more difficult for us to plan our trip (5 hours from Appleton).

Is there any chance, with the current forecast, that the smelt will be running by this weekend? Or is it likely occur during the week next week and into the weekend?

Thanks for any advice or input

-Skippy Lou

The ice is still in the bay, look at the live cams. One is river rock inn cam and the other is northern state bank cam. The sat image fro. Yesterday didn' even show up and todays is all clouds. Doesn' mean ice is safe at all. Looks bad but still there.

The NASA satellite looked like most of it pushed out yesterday surprisingly.
