FISHING REPORT
2/9/08 8:25 PM CST
Ice Depth: 14" Conditions: Partly Sunny Air Temp: 0° - 5° F
Hi!

First of all I want to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I hope everyone enjoys their family and friends and has a fabulously fun and successful 2008. Ice fishing is taking off here in the Glacial Lakes with about 13-14" thick ice. Only walking, 4-wheelers and snowmobilers have been safe so far for getting out on the ice. There are soft spots and one of Gary's friends went in, up to his neck. So do be careful. Just in case you wonder, he wasn’t fishing with Gary…..One has to have a good sense of humor. If you are not familiar with fishing the Glacial Lakes, don't miss the opportunity to fish with Gary, our exclusive guide. You will be glad you took the opportunity……….to fish, not go swimming. There are walleyes, northerns, perch and some pan fish being caught on most of the lakes. Weather has been pretty stable this week which has helped. Hope you take a moment and join us up here in the Coteau Hills of the Glacial Lakes. It is beautiful country. You can also see more about fishing the Glacial Lakes on Tony Dean Outdoors, PBS’ Prairie Television with Ted Takasaki and Tim Bakkan as well as Al Lindner, Dave Genz, Bob Jensen with Fishing the Midwest, Berkley Tackle, In-depth Angling, Clam Corporation and the Ice Team to name a few.

Again, The Staff of Roy Lake Resort wishes all of you and your families a wonderful Christmas and a very happy New Year. Jan

Well made it up from Rockford, IL. for the week of 5/30-6/3/05. Not really much to report..really slow this week...Cottonwood the same, as well as Cattail...Did manage a few walleye and smallmouth, all released back for another day...Nephew got one huge Northern on Cattail which he also released back.

Hi: This is from jan@roylakeresort.com. My lakefront dining room is a place where people can visit, play cards and put tip ups outfront and ice fish. Last week a 11 1/2 lb. northern and others in the 3-6 lb. range were caught doing just that. Also, we are the premiere small mouth bass lake and if you check my web page at www.roylakeresort.com you will some of those pictures including walleyes up to 9 1/2 lbs. Some were caught at 10-11 lb. during the early ice fishing season. Roy Lake is a very balanced lake and plenty of food. It is also a gin-clear glacial lake so the fish see you. It is easiest fished in the evening. The glacial lakes are affected by fronts too. So be prepared to try different lakes.

Last week I fished with Tony Dean on a nearby slough and caught perch in the 1 lb. range. We came back to the ressort and fried them up for lunch...oh, so good.

I am betting ice off will be around the 10th of April. Maybe sooner as the temps are pretty warm and tomorrow we are supposed to get se winds.

I will try to send pictures, I am a slow learner and as Tony Dean says I am blond.

Take care,\\ Dakota Sunshine

Great northern pike action just south of the State park.

10-12 FOW Using Beaver dam tip-ups and shiners. Fish up to 12 lbs.

Agree with Field and Stream about the Bass here. They are big and voracious feeders.

See the latest issue of FIELD AND STREAM for a report on Roy Lake. They named it the best Bass lake in South Dakota. There goes my spot on the pier at Roy Lake Resort but limits and restrictions should allow for the opportunity to catch a big fish.

One of the best fishing trips I've ever had was to South Dakota and I stayed at the Roy Lake Resort. Set up tipups and watched them from the resort. Caught some nice walleyes while Jan fed and entertained us. Imagine my surprise as I was surfing this site and came across these comments which I totally agree with. I will return to Roy Lake resort if I fish any lake in the area.

Go to www.roylakeresort.com and you get everything but -unfortunately- a picture of Jan. call her for local fishing and hunting info she reports on Tony Dean's site. think she is his best source of info. It is the best spot to stay in the area if space available.
