On the south end... The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free. Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well. Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.

Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well.On the Rainy River... Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing. Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River. To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day! We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range. Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.

On the south end... Cold spring weather the past couple of weeks dispelled the predictions of even the greatest of weather and ice predictors on social media. The bottom line, after an early warm up, conditions turned to winter again preserving ice conditions for those wanting to take advantage of March ice fishing.
March ice anglers were rewarded with good catches of walleyes, saugers and of course this time of year, monster pike. Resorts have now pulled fish houses from the ice as the last day fish houses could be overnight on the ice was March 31st. Although the walleye season continues through April 14th, for the most part, ice accesses are closed for the year.Monster pike are staged in pre-spawn areas. Soon, they will make their way to back bays and ditches to spawn. This creates some great pike fishing as the pike season on LOW never closes.Anticipation is high for the MN Fishing Opener, which is Saturday, May 11th. Good numbers of walleyes and saugers are currently staged along the south shore.On the Rainy River... Open water is expanding nicely again after thin ice formed over already open water due to cold overnight temps. With daytime temps in the 40's and 50's over the next couple of weeks, things are looking good. The Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp are all open. Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river. Most fish being caught are 16 - 26 inches with a few giants over 30 inches being caught. The hope is the big female walleyes will be making their way up the river from the lake once water temps rise a bit. Although every ice road makes their own decisions based on ice conditions in their area, pickup trucks with wheelhouses are still able to drive out and fish on most ice roads. Check with each individual ice road for specific limits.
This has been a different year with temps up and down. This year, and every year, it is important to stay on the resort ice roads. It is tempting to go off on your own as there isn't much snow, but that is a risky move as some areas have less ice, cracks or ice upheavals. Resorts and outfitters keep their roads marked on the best ice and monitor it numerous times per day.
The majority of ice fishing for walleyes and saugers is still taking place in 24 - 32 feet of water. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go. Gold, glow red, glow white, and pink are still good colors.

Up at the NW Angle... Ice fishing has begun for some resorts up at the NW Angle and initial reports are very good. Walleyes, saugers, jumbo perch and pike in the mix.
Much like the south shore, use one jigging line, one deadstick and rotate colors until you figure out what they want, but certain colors mentioned in this report are great in stained water.
Many resorts on both ends of the lake / river have immediate openings. The bite is definitely on!
