Big Cormorant Lake, Becker County (all postings)

Hey fellow anglers! Hope everybody had a good winter and is as ready for open water angling as I am. With ice still on most lakes for opener I was not able to go out, but I am planning on going out on the water this weekend and I will be giving a detailed report on the conditions and fishing. I will also be once again posting reports for Big Cormorant all summer and fall until ice-up again and will also be reporting a few other lakes as well! Thank you for all the support I have recieved regarding these reports, it means alot that people are willing to listen and use information on the hottest bites and techniques going on in the area! OVERVIEW- Another great couple of days fishing! The lake is hot right now so if you get a chance bring the boat up to Big Cormorant, and get in on the stellar walleye fishing that's happening right now.

Fished Friday evening for about 2 hours and brought back 2 beautiful eyes', a 16.25" and a 16.5". Missed about 3 more, but still a succesful outing. Both fish and all of our bites came on lindy-rigs w/crawlers.Went out Saturday from 7am-230pm and came through with a limit of more beautiful eaters all ranging from 14"-17". Once again the lindy-rigs w/crawlers were the ticket, tried small sucker minnows but they didn't produce. We even found a new spot to add to our list of Big C' honey holes. A rock bed that starts in 23FOW and slopes down to 31FOW, just North-East of the island.

Cooler air temps and some rain during the week dropped the water temp a few degrees from 75 degrees down to 72 degrees. Didn't hurt the fishing though, if anything it helped it. A better class of fish moved up onto the deep points, breaks, and saddles this last week as it seems the smaller 13" class goes where the huge clouds of baitfish go (which are plentiful this time of year). So it pays to know where the wind is coming from and having good electronics to distinguish schools of bait. The fish moved a little deeper too, all of the fish caught where in 23FOW to 28FOW, BUT as the sun got higher in the sky we found fish stacked in 31FOW. We couldn't get those fish to bite though, whcih shows that these aren't feedings areas but places for the fish to rest before and after moving up to their feeding areas. The crawler bite is hot right now and should last for a couple more weeks, as long as we dont have any major and sudden drops in temperature. When that time comes, gonna have to switch over to suckers and redtails.

OVERVIEW- Went out this last weekend and fishing was very good. The lake has been hot the last few weeks so if you get a chance, get on up there and wet a line!

We went out Friday evening and fished for about 2 hours. I caught my biggest walleye of the year and it put up a great fight. I wont say exactly how big it was, but what I will say is that it was too big to eat, yet not quite big enough to mount. So I realesed her to fight another day. We caught 2 more eyes' that night, an 18" and and a 13". All fish were caught on a lindy rig with a crawler. We fished Saturday from 7am-3pm and brought back 6 and threw back 4. Most of the fish were caught, again, on lindy rigs with crawlers. But 1 was caught on a gold jig w/leech and another on a red spinner with a crawler. Smaller year-class of fish was what we caught from 12"-14". Went out Sunday from 7am-2pm and brought back 4 and probably threw back a half dozen. Once again they were all in that 13"-14" range. Also once again, all of the fish were caught on lindy rigs with crawlers. All of the fish we caught were from 22-27FOW on deep points, breaks, and saddles. OVERVIEW- We went out Saturday evening and tried several spots n tactics. We first went to a deep point n three-wayed with spinners tipped with a whole crawler in 30-33FOW, n had a couple nice hits n lost them. The best spinner color seemed to be orange, which wasnt suprising considering the sun was setting and it was getting dark. Next we tried a big saddle between the island and a big rock pile a slow trolled while jigging in 14-29 FOW. One rock bass was all that yielded. Last spot of the night was the outside weededge of the island in 18FOW and we were able to pull one 13-inch walleye outta there. Probly could've gotten a few more but the bugs drove us off. Too bad too because that small walleye was a sign that the fish were starting to come up from the depths to feed because the small fish are always first to arrive and the first to leave before the big boys come in and take over. Saw a boat slip-bobbering the weed edge and that's the right thing to do at night. That and trolling cranks'.
